Douglas named player of year

Staff Report Senior guard Ruben Douglas of the UNM men's basketball team was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Monday. Douglas torched the MWC, averaging a record 32.1 PPG in conference games. He leads the nation in scoring with 28.1 PPG.

Enrollment, retention on the rise

by Justin Gonzalez Daily Lobo The 2002 fall semester at UNM saw the largest beginning freshmen class in 28 years and 88.4 percent of those students returned this spring, the highest retention in more than five years. As of the Feb. 7 census date, 23,813 students were attending UNM’s main campus, compared with 22,946 last spring, making it the largest spring enrollment since 1999, according to a UNM press release.

Editor, Your coverage of the student anti-war demonstrations was awful. There are several inaccuracies and misrepresentations, which need to be addressed. First, the title of the main article, “Pro-Bush, Anti-War Protesters Face Off,” misrepresents both the content of the story and the nature of the protest.

Spring Storm event still open for sign-up

by Arthur Simoni Daily Lobo The Community Experience is extending its March 10 deadline for applications for Spring Storm 2003 to March 28. Community Experience, an ASUNM executive agency, was created last fall to allow students to participate in community service projects around Albuquerque.

Tennis battles against NMSU, ends up on top

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The UNM men's tennis team improved its record to 7-4 by defeating intrastate rival New Mexico State 4-3 Saturday. Despite losing sophomore David Kowalski to a sprained ankle, the Lobos had reason to look forward to the match with the return of Ryan Stotland and senior leader Bart Scott.

Egyptology Day not all ancient

The ancient and contemporary worlds of Egypt met in movies, children's activities and faculty presentations Saturday as hundreds of community members turned out to attend the UNM Hibben Center's Egyptology Day. "I think we got what we wanted," said Candace Maher, one of the event's organizers.

Seniors say so long to Pit in perfect form

The Lobos capped a perfect 7-0 home season with a brilliant 63-44 win over BYU Saturday at The Pit. With the win, UNM secured the second-place slot in the Mountain West Conference, following only Utah, who the Lobos defeated Thursday night. UNM has now beaten every team in the MWC.

Football player's case still up in air

The wheels of justice are turning slowly for UNM senior running back Quincy Wright -- at both the state and University levels. In January, detectives from the Albuquerque Police Department began investigating Wright's involvement with the alleged forging of nine Oklahoma drivers licenses, which were found at a local Kinkos.

Athletes of the Week

Senior center Jordan Adams of the women's basketball team and Bart Scott of the men's tennis team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Adams helped her team to crucial victories over Utah and BYU. She had nine points and seven rebounds in a 51-48 comeback victory over Utah Thursday.

Sports in Brief

Skiing UNM's ski team finished the 2003 NCAA Skiing Championships with a final score of 541.5 -- fourth-place overall. The University of Vermont and Colorado University slid past the Lobos on the last day of competition with CU taking third at 546.5 points, just five points ahead of UNM.

Student gets political

A UNM student has been busy this weekend contacting New Mexico politicians while working with 100 other students in Washington, D.C., to better protect the nation's wildlands. Willa Hafich, a freshman studying within University College, began attending the Public Lands Action summit in Washington, D.

Lobo golf struggles in Vegas showdown

Staff Report Just five of 15 teams finished under-par at the Toyota Las Vegas Intercollegiate golf tournament last weekend; UNM was not one of them. The Lobos finished the event in 13th place, with a three-day total of 879; 15 shots over-par and a distant 23 shots behind winner Oklahoma State University.

Wavin' the flags

Hundreds of people gathered at Kirtland Air Force Base Saturday to show their support for Bush and the military. Two anti-war protesters were arrested and cited for disorderly conduct after they tried to stop traffic and get the other protesters to join them.

LETTER: Bullying UNM ROTC members not peaceful

Editor, I am a liberal. I support many liberal ideas and concepts, though it is becoming increasingly difficult to be taken seriously because of ignorant displays such as some of the events that took place at the recent anti-war protest. Although there were many people and speakers that were well informed, there were also many students, or possibly non-students, that were sitting in little groups smoking pot.

Lobo baseball team sends visitors packing

Staff Report The UNM baseball team pulled out some late-inning heroics against the University of Texas-Arlington for a 17-12 victory Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. The game began with the Mustangs getting off to an early one run lead courtesy of Ryan Roberts solo home run.
