Red Cross Club to offer activities to community

by Stephanie Candelaria Daily Lobo With fewer than 25 employees, the Mid-Rio Grande Chapter of the American Red Cross depends on a core of trained volunteers to fulfill its mission in the local community. Now, a small group of UNM students will do its part to help the international humanitarian organization.

ASUNM Profiles: Keith Lopez

Junior Keith Lopez said he is running for ASUNM senate because he has a lot of pride in UNM and he wants to provide a voice for all students. "Campus-wide involvement with ASUNM is very important," Lopez said. "As a senator, being a familiar face, saying, 'hey, I'm here, this is what your senate does,' that is how it's supposed to work.

Junior Jenny French is running for re-election to the ASUNM senate because she said she believes the student government goes a long way helping students at UNM. French, who is a member of the Horizon slate, said that her slate's goals would create a safer and cleaner campus.

UNM softball team looks to rebound

The UNM softball team aims to get back on the winning track when it plays host to the BYU Cougars for a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Lobo Field. UNM (16-26-1, 1-5 Mountain West Conference) is coming off a pair of losses to league rival Colorado State University, Saturday.

ASUNM Profiles: Matt Hanson

ASUNM senatorial candidate Matt Hanson, who is running as a member of the Vision slate, said that if elected, he would like to push for faculty evaluation forms that would be accessible to students. "I think it would make the faculty more responsible if they knew students could look up an evaluation, filled out by other students, and decide whether or not they want to take the class," he said.

UNM senior Nick Trudell said he will make a good ASUNM Senator because he is very organized, in touch with the needs of the students and easy to approach. Trudell, a member of the Cherries to Silver campaign, said that his main objective, if elected, will be to bring the fun back to the UNM campus.

LETTER: UNM community can interact with regents

Editor, Today, the regents of the University of New Mexico will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Roberts Room of Scholes Hall to, among other things, set tuition for the 2003-04 academic year (about a 4.5 percent increase) and approve a recommended average percent salary increase (3 percent) for staff and faculty at UNM.

Gonzales leads Lobo pack

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo Imagine running 90 to 100 miles a week during summer vacation; think about purchasing eight to 10 pairs of running shoes a year - that is what it takes for UNM's Matt Gonzales to be ranked first in the nation. Gonzales, a junior on the UNM men's track team, qualified for the NCAA national track championships at a meet in Stanford earlier this year.

"We were playing a night game, the lights weren't great and I was having trouble seeing the ball," Young said.

LETTER: Nice to see chalking of ‘poon’ on campus

Editor, I woke up last Thursday morning and the first thing I heard was the question, “Did you guys see ‘poon’ written everywhere?” I knew already that this was certainly a more interesting morning than usual. Last Thursday, as I rose to attend my classes, I saw something juvenile; a 16 foot-tall “POON” written on the Zimmerman Library building’s front brick.
