Lobo baseball tastes victory at home again

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo After a streak of blown leads cost the Lobo baseball team five of its last six games, it was finally UNM's turn to come from behind Sunday at Lobo Field. Timely hitting, key defensive and baserunning plays enabled UNM to pull out a tight 5-4, 10-inning win against the San Diego State Aztecs.

Lobo bullpen ready for action

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The Lobos look to end a tough four-game losing streak when San Diego State University comes to Albuquerque this weekend for an important three-game series. After three narrow losses to Mountain West Conference leader UNLV, followed by another close defeat at the hands of New Mexico State University on Wednesday, the series against the Aztecs is suddenly crucial for a team looking to boost itself back to the top of the MWC.

Capital punishment is a rigorous moral debate that has, for years, left two groups of individuals pitted against one another; it's a political subject that most everyone would enjoy seeing some sort of solution to, or at most, some sort of way to avoid such a divisive moral encounter.

ASUNM: Veronica Garcia

ASUNM senatorial candidate Veronica Garcia, who is running with the Vision slate, said increased security on campus will be one of her highest priorities if elected. "UNM consistently has a high number of incidents regarding students' safety every year," Garcia said.

Sophomore Amy Corcoran, an ASUNM senatorial candidate, said she wants to connect student government with individuals and other groups on campus, whether they are affiliated with an organization or not. "The social aspect is really important to me," Corcoran said.

Experts focus on global warming

A conference featuring presentations by some UNM professors and focusing on local climate change and public perception of it will make its way to campus and the surrounding community this weekend, starting tonight. The second annual conference on global warming, "Heating Up: Coming to Terms with Climate Change in New Mexico," will run through Sunday and attempt to translate the scientific topic into public terms with a diversity of experts and activities.

Penley focuses on development

Larry Penley, one of five finalists for the UNM presidential position, challenged students, faculty and staff Thursday to raise the University's national and international reputation by continuing to enrich the local and state communities. "UNM is an institution with an enormous future ahead of it," Penley said to a group of about 15 people in the Willard Reading Room.

ASUNM: Pedro Arturo Ramos

Sophomore Pedro Arturo Ramos said he would make a good ASUNM senator because he is honest, open-minded and determined. "I am a man of my word," Ramos said. "Anyone who knows me knows that when I say I'll do something, it gets done." Ramos, a mechanical engineering major, is running with the Horizon slate.

UNM track team heads south

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo UNM head track coach Matt Henry will face off against his brother - Pat Henry, head track coach at Louisiana State University, this weekend. The Lobo men's and women's track teams will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to face returning NCAA champions LSU on Saturday.

Softball hits good groove

Ashley Shartzer delivered a clutch two-run homer that sent the UNM softball team to a 4-2 victory over BYU at Lobo Field Thursday. After the Cougars tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, freshman shortstop Ashley VanBoxmeer led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit through the left side of the infield.

Duff Lill, a junior majoring in finance, said he is running for ASUNM Senate because he has experienced the executive side of student government and wants to make a difference on the legislative. "I was executive lobbying director for ASUNM," Lill said.

Workshops aim to improve

by Erin Raterman Daily Lobo A series of UNM spring semester workshops designed to help teaching assistants become better educators is underway with its second installment beginning today. The workshops are organized by the Teaching Assistance Resource Center and funded through UNM's Department of Academic Affairs.

Sophomore Natalie Montgomery, who is running for ASUNM senator on the Horizon slate, said that if elected, she wants to use her position to unite all the undergraduate organizations on campus to better UNM. "In order for everyone here to see their goals to fruition, they need all the support they can get," Montgomery said.

ASUNM passes 2003-04 budget

The ASUNM Senate unanimously passed its budget for the 2003-04 fiscal year Wednesday with $310,404 out of $485,747 going back to funding for the Associated Students of UNM. The ASUNM student agencies — Community Experience, the Crafts Studio, the Elections Commission, the Homecoming Committee, the South West Film Center and Student Special Events — accounted for most of the $310,404.
