Men's Basketball: New Mexico hopes to end early-season road struggles

The UNM men’s basketball team is looking for improvement on its second road trip of the season as it takes on Illinois State in the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge Saturday evening. New Mexico (5-2) is 4-0 when playing at WisePies Arena, aka the Pit. But last week, in its first action on the road, the team wasn’t as fortunate, going 1-2 in the Wooden Legacy tournament in California. The Lobos redeemed themselves with a 64-55 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats (3-3) Wednesday night in the 50th anniversary of the first game played at WisePies Arena/the Pit.

The Lobo women’s basketball team will look to get back on track as it hosts Southern Methodist Saturday while honoring the Pit’s 50th anniversary, the second time the arena is being honored after the men’s team played earlier in the week. New Mexico (2-4) won its first two games of the season decisively, but has dropped four in a row since that time. The team has struggled to close out games, fading most recently against in-state rival New Mexico State in a 77-70 loss on Wednesday.

Women's Basketball: Aggies rebound from halftime deficit to take down UNM

Late fourth quarter woes halted the New Mexico women's basketball team’s hopes of sweeping the New Mexico States this season, as the final score favored the hometown Aggies, 77-70. The loss dropped the Lobos to a 2-4 record and marks the fourth straight loss, while the Aggies won their third straight to improve to 5-2. Head coach Mike Bradbury thought that his team played well throughout most of the game, but fell short when it mattered most.

Men's Basketball: Lobos win big in 50th anniversary game

The Lobo men’s basketball team won their first ever victory in The Pit nearly 50 years ago, by beating Abilene Christian 62-53. Wednesday night the Lobos had a little déjà vu — garnering an almost identical victory. The Lobos (5-2) picked up a 64-55 victory over the Wildcats (3-3), after withstanding a few early runs and playing without two of its starters. Head coach Craig Neal said junior Sam Logwood was a scratch before the game, as he was nursing a deep leg contusion that limited his mobility.

Men's Basketball: Lobos hope to turn things around as UNM, fans celebrate 50 years of WisePies Arena/the Pit

It was New Mexico’s first ever opponent at the Pit. So nearly 50 years later, it’s only fitting that Abilene Christian would return to share the court with the Lobos. New Mexico (4-2) will host Abilene Christian (3-2) on a night when the Lobos will not only hope to safeguard its perfect 8-0 all-time series record, but also on an evening of celebration and remembrance for 50 years of basketball and other events at the venue, now WisePies Arena. The Lobos have won over 81 percent of its home games in the venue’s history, a release stated.

UNM (2-3) throttled New Mexico State (4-2) in the second game of the season, taking an 84-55 blowout victory at WisePies Arena. Lobo junior guard Alex Lapeyrolerie was a big factor in the team's win over the Aggies, scoring 22 points in just 30 minutes off the bench — five of her seven made shots came from beyond the arc.

Football: Lobos win share of Mountain Division title for first time in nearly 20 years

Wyoming will head on to play in the Mountain West Championship game, but New Mexico looked like the best team in the conference in a 56-35 thumping of the Cowboys Saturday night. Last week New Mexico was dominated by Colorado State 39-31. But at University Stadium, it was a complete role reversal as the Lobos rebounded to stifle the best team in the conference. The win by New Mexico (8-4, 6-2 MW) earned the Lobos a share of the Mountain Division crown for the first time since 1997, joining Wyoming (8-4, 6-2 MW) and Boise State (10-2, 6-2 MW) as co-champs.

The Lobos dropped to 4-2, finishing the weekend with a 57-64 loss to the Dayton Flyers (4-2). Their performance was nothing like the one they turned in on Friday, when they broke a few Wooden Legacy records en route to a 105-89 victory over Cal State Northridge.

Football: Lobos can get share of division title with win against Wyoming

A loss by Boise State (10-2, 6-2 MW) in its final regular season game just made the season finale between the Lobos and Wyoming on Saturday a lot more interesting. A win by Wyoming (8-3, 6-1 MW) would give the Cowboys the division crown outright, while New Mexico (7-4, 5-2) could force a three-way tie to earn co-champ honors. A share of the division title would be the first for the Lobos since 1997, although Boise State would likely get the nod to play in the Mountain West Championship by virtue of its higher ranking.

Women's Basketball: Lobos' shooting comes up short against Texas Tech

Lobo women's basketball seemed to have left its magic shooting touch in Albuquerque, as the team shot a dismal percentage from the field en route to a 69-58 loss on the road at Texas Tech. New Mexico (2-1) has shown it likes to shoot the three, but on Sunday the deep ball just wasn’t there. The Lobos shot just 8 for 37 from beyond the arc, but still managed to keep the score close for most of the game. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor throughout. Texas Tech (2-1) made just under 35 percent of its shots (29 of 83), but the Lobos were even less efficient (23 of 80), connecting on just 29 percent of shots.
