Former New Mexico men’s basketball player Cameron Bairstow signed a three year deal with the Chicago Bulls earlier today. The Bulls selected Bairstow in the second round of the NBA draft with the 49th overall selection in June. The terms of the contract were not released per term policy.

Printed April 1, 1999 In what was called a “painful, but very necessary, decision,” by UNM Athletic Director Rudy Davalos, the UNM Athletics Department announced it would cut the funding of three sports for the 1999-2000 fiscal year. Those cuts mean the elimination of men’s swimming, men’s gymnastics and men’s wrestling teams from the athletic program. Davalos said in a news release the cuts were necessary because the department did not have enough resources to support 24 athletic programs. “Maintaining programs that are regionally and nationally competitive was a condition of membership in the Mountain West Conference, and we will allocate all of our resources to ensure that our remaining sports can achieve excellence,” he said in the release. The department said the elimination of the three sports is expected to reduce department expenditures by approximately $175,000 for its 1999-2000 budget, and its savings will eventually grow to more than $300,000 annually.

First-game sluggishness plagued the Wolfpack through most of the game, which officially opened the new University Basketball Arena before a crowd of 12,020, just 2,800 short of capacity. The Wildcats, virtually unknown to Albuqeurque and not too well-known to even the Lobo mentors, showed up sporting NCAA Regional Champion patches on their warmup jackets and started fans wondering just how tough the boys from Abilene were.

Team chemistry and shaping the incoming freshmen for collegiate play is the major focus of the New Mexico women’s basketball team this offseason. Head coach Yvonne Sanchez has added five new faces to a roster containing just three seniors. In order to get her young unit ready, Sanchez and the Lobos will be boarding an international flight to Italy to play four exhibition games in anticipation for the 2014-2015 season.
Scholar-Athletes On Tuesday the Mountain West Conference announced that a record 651 student-athletes were named Scholar-Athletes. Of those 651 student-athletes, UNM had 117 Scholar-Athletes — 25 more than the next-most institution.
In the midst of summer, current and former UNM soccer players could be found spending time together out in the Sol. The Albuquerque Sol, that is. Five Lobo players and four former players spent their summer playing for Albuquerque’s newest team, the Albuquerque Sol FC. The Sol is part of the USL Premier Development League, the top-level men’s amateur soccer competition in the country.
On Tuesday, New Mexico and the Mountain West Conference announced that the Lobos’ Aug. 30 season and home opener against UTEP will be broadcasted by the Mountain West Network at 6 p.m. It will be broadcasted exclusively on the MWN and CampusInsiders.com. UNM’s game against UTEP is one of seven that will be shown on both sites.
UNM will host its 21st annual New Mexico Women’s Football Clinic on July 24th at Branch Field. The clinic gives women a first-hand look at how the Lobo football program operates. Attendees will also get to meet with head coach Bob Davie and his coaching staff.
A New Mexico Highlands spokesman confirmed Thursday afternoon UNM assistant coach Craig Snow has been officially offered and accepted NMHU’s head basketball coaching position. Snow will replace Joe Harge at the helm of the Division II Cowboys, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Association team that went 11-15 last season.
