UNM earns award for minimizing pollution

The UNM Grounds and Landscape Department's innovative programs, which cut back on the use of dangerous chemicals on campus, has earned it the Pollution Prevention Award from Albuquerque's Wastewater Utility Division. The award is given annually to institutions that comply with city, state and federal guidelines of safety and innovative procedures for reducing harmful waste.

President search in full gear

The UNM Board of Regents began official proceedings to choose the University's next president when it passed the Presidential Search Committee selections during its monthly meeting Tuesday. The committee is comprised of three regents, three faculty members, one dean, one undergraduate student and one graduate student, one staff member and one alumnus or community leader.

Researcher focuses on role of women in water issues

by April Hale Daily Lobo Sara Ahmed, a water researcher from India, said during a presentation Tuesday in Dane Smith Hall that women play important roles in water issues, especially at a domestic level. "Very often at the household level it is the woman's responsibility," Ahmed said.

Body found in dorm last week now identified

Staff Report Officials from the state Office of the Medical Investigator announced Monday that they have identified the body of a UNM student found in a Student Residence Center apartment. The body of Frank Baca, 47, a senior who studied sociology, was discovered by a University housing crew Friday.

Attorney General John Ashcroft's USA PATRIOT Act and its possible negative affect on UNM and other college students were explored in a panel discussion that included students, School of Law faculty and representatives from the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico Monday.

Officials angered by construction delays with SUB

Julie Weaks, UNM's vice president for business and finance, said that she is "at the end of her rope" with the Student Union Building construction and is seeking legal ways to compensate for its construction delays. "This is not acceptable and I want to take whatever action is possible," she said.

Socorro car crash results in UNM student's death

UNM senior Erron Todd, 21, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002 from injuries she sustained when the vehicle she was riding in was hit by a N.M. State Police car in Socorro. Also killed in the crash was Jeremiah Wright, 22, a New Mexico Tech senior. The driver of the car, Christopher Michel, 22, also a student at Tech, survived the accident and was released from UNM Hospital Sept.

Corpse discovered in SRC dorm room

Officials from UNM Police Department and the state's Office of the Medical Investigator are still trying to identify a body discovered Friday inside a Student Residence Center. UNMPD Commander James Daniels said due to the amount of decomposition that had taken place prior to the discovery of the body, police are having to use alternative methods of identification.

Engineering professor honored for contributions

Staff Report Jeff Brinker, UNM professor of chemical and nuclear engineering and chemistry has been named one of seven recipients of the E.O. Lawrence Award, given to recipients for outstanding contributions in the field of atomic energy. "I'm of course extremely honored to be the recipient of this award.

Director finalist shares ideas

Doralia Freudiger, the last of four candidates for the director of UNM's Office of Equal Opportunity, told University officials Thursday that she would use her ability and expertise to change the office for the better. "I have the skills and I will put them to use at UNM," Freudiger said.

School of Engineering in top 50 list

The UNM School of Engineering was recently ranked among the top 50 engineering schools in the nation that offer a doctorate degree by U.S. News and World Report. The school was ranked 46 of 50 and tied with Dartmouth College, the University of Massachusetts and Vanderbilt University.

Three UNM students whose on-campus food delivery service was shut down by University officials last month have done the only thing they could to reopen their business - move it off campus. "It was disappointing," said Elliott Paull, one of the owners of Underground Services.

UNM police make alleged campus rape primary case

Staff Report UNM police are "actively investigating" the alleged rape of a student that reportedly took place on campus Saturday at about 2 a.m., said UNMPD Commander James Daniels. The investigation is ongoing, so details pertaining to the alleged crime are not all available at this time, Daniels said.

Texaco protestors receive probation

In a trial that had been dubbed the "Texaco Seven," charges were dismissed against three defendants while the remaining four, including UNM American Studies Professor Bob Anderson, were convicted of criminal trespass Wednesday. Each of the four defendants convicted, also including UNM students Julie Buckland and Cara McClendon, were sentenced to six months of probation, 20 hours of community service and were asked by presiding Judge Marie Baca not to return to the Texaco gas station where they had chained themselves to gas pumps in April to protest U.

Architect solves space problem

Staff Report UNM School of Architecture and Planning Assistant Professor Tim Castillo has received an honorable mention from the Paris-based group e2 for his work on improving urban parking problems. "In my project, PARK(ING), I look critically at the blacktop surface as unused space," Castillo said in a UNM press release.

Regents pass new program for nursing

The UNM Board of Regents' Academic/Student Affairs Committee helped the College of Nursing get one step closer to establishing the state's first nursing doctoral degree program yesterday when it approved its proposal Tuesday. The proposal, which still has several steps to take before it can become a reality, was made in an effort to prepare UNM nursing students who can assume leadership roles in academia, including the teaching, research and professional service healthcare fields.

Undergraduate degrees decrease overall

by Emily A. Williams Daily Lobo Since 1991, the number of bachelor's degrees awarded by UNM colleges and schools has fluctuated. Each college's individual itinerary, funding and areas of focus have contributed to their graduation numbers. Among the colleges on the rise are the Anderson School of Management and the College of Fine Arts, both having awarded more undergraduate degrees last year than in any of the past 10 years.

Sanchez a no-show for speech

About 30 students showed up to the UNM College Republican's meeting Tuesday night eager to hear Republican gubernatorial candidate John Sanchez speak - however, the candidate was a no-show due to a scheduling conflict. Marty Ruano, deputy political director for the candidate's campaign, filled in for Sanchez and answered students' questions regarding the upcoming election and his campaign strategy.

HESO career fair gives students a shot at NASA

Staff Report UNM engineering students will have an opportunity to meet with members of one of the world's leading science and technology producers as NASA representatives visit campus this week. The representatives will be at the UNM Hispanic Engineering Student Organization's 22nd Annual Career Fair Thursday and Friday at Johnson Recreation Center.
