Cause still a mystery in UNM student dorm death

Officials at the state Office of the Medical Investigator have not yet determined the cause of death for a 47-year-old student who was found in his Student Resident Center dorm room Oct. 4. Tim Stepetic, associate director of the Office of the Medical Investigator, said toxicology tests are in the process of being performed and that they should shed light on why the senior biology major died.

Presidential search advertisement approved

The UNM Presidential Search Subcommittee met Monday for a short meeting where committee members approved the position announcement and the search firm contract. Committee members edited the presidential position advertisement, which will appear in the Chronicle on Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education and the Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education, said UNM Public Relations Director Frank Martinez.

YWCA to organize 8th annual

The YWCA's local Middle Rio Grande chapter will help organize several events around Albuquerque to commemorate a Week Without Violence, including the 2002 Take Back the Night rally Wednesday at UNM. The events are part of the Young Women's Christian Association Week Without Violence campaign that emphasizes alternatives to family violence, violence linked to racism, sexism and bigotry and violence in the media.

Hopeful royalty raise funds for foundation

Students running for UNM's 2002 Homecoming Court took time out of their busy schedules last week to partner with the New Mexico Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise money for national Cystic Fibrosis Week. The students in contention for the title of Homecoming king and queen sold "roses" for $10 as part of the extensive community service that accompanies the title of Homecoming representative for UNM.

Lobos look to beat Utah Utes for Homecoming

This week is supposed to be full of college tradition. It's our chance as students to choose a king and queen to represent the University of New Mexico. Yes folks, Homecoming week is upon us and one thing that spells is football. I know a lot of us still have a bitter taste in our mouths from Saturday's disappointing loss to Utah State, but this is a chance for the student body to put aside those petty feelings and welcome home our football team.

First Homecoming party will have murals, music

by Jessica Quinn Daily Lobo Homecoming on the Range will kick off its first party on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m., with chalk murals, live music from CIVITAS, and a chance to meet the candidates for King and Queen in front of the UNM Bookstore. The chalk murals are one of a series of Cherry/Silver competitions that student organizations can participate in.

New degree offered

by Shelby Kocurek Daily Lobo Greg Cajete, the new director of UNM's Native American Studies, said he has plans to transform the program's minor into a bachelor's degree program. Cajete, a long time resident of New Mexico and member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, was appointed director in 2001, but because of sabbatical, he officially took over the position in May 2002.

Homecoming ushers in UNM soccer teams

Homecoming and American football go together like Angels and Rally Monkeys. F£tbol, or soccer if you prefer, and Homecoming usually do not. But this year UNM is including soccer as part of its "Homecoming on the Range" celebrations this week. The men's and women's soccer teams take on teams from the Air Force Academy Friday night as part of homecoming festivities.

University throws a party for Garcia

UNM community members expressed their positive sentiments about new University President Chris Garcia during a welcoming party at University House Friday. The event, which served as an official opportunity for the University community to meet Garcia, UNM's 17th president, featured several speakers throughout of the afternoon, including Garcia himself who emphasized his roots in Albuquerque and at UNM.

Development lecture offers insight into urban nature

The need for a shift among city planners from over-developed, crowded urban areas to a more people-friendly and less crowded city was the topic of discussion in a lecture given Sunday by Rutherford Platt. The lecture, "The Ecological City," was the sixth presentation in a seven-part interdisciplinary lecture series entitled "Visions for the American West.

UNM to show school spirit for Homecoming pep rally

by April Hale Daily Lobo This year's Homecoming theme is "Homecoming on the Range" and the entire pep rally committee will be dressed in western wear to help provide the spirit. The Homecoming Pep Rally will be Friday afternoon on the west side of Zimmerman Library.

Staff Report Three UNM undergraduate American Indian students have been selected to be recipients of the Ford Motor Company/American Indian College Fund Corporate scholarship, a $5,000 award for the fall semester only bestowed upon 12 recipients nationwide.

Pharmacy, hospital staff find suspected narcotics

News in Brief: Police were dispatched to the University Hospital and to the UNM Pharmacy Tuesday in response to two separate reports of staff finding suspected narcotics. In the first incident, UNM Hospital security staff turned over a crack pipe and a tablet stamped '512.

Regents have shaky history

The UNM Board of Regents does not have a complacent history with the Open Meetings Act when it comes to presidential searches - and with the new search underway, it will need to stick to the letter of the law. Bob Johnson, executive director of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, was directly involved in the last two presidential searches, the last of which included legal action against UNM by the watchdog group that resulted in the search being stalled for nearly two years.

Visual artist shares new computer-based art during lecture

by Meredith Wade Daily Lobo Nationally known visual artist Rebeca Bollinger, who participated in the Gale Memorial Lecture Series Thursday, said she makes her art by downloading portraits from the Internet and printing them on cookies, programs that allow the user to personalize images.

UNM Fire Marshal Vince Leonard begins his days not in his office, but at various campus construction sites. "We handle every aspect of fire safety from inspections to new construction projects on campus," Leonard said. "We're a one-stop shop for safety on campus.

Students learn self-defense, prevention

Senate passes fall budget unanimously

The ASUNM Senate unanimously passed its fall budget Wednesday, approving $51,576 that will be distributed to 49 student groups. "We're really happy with the work we've done," Sen. Tim Serna said. "We came out about $2,300 lower than what we first projected.

by Stuart Overbey Daily Lobo Richard Schaefer, a communication associate professor, will be leaving the country on a sabbatical next semester to study his theory of Chinese replacing English when digital technology replaces current Internet technology.
