UNM officials speak up on relevance of accreditation

by Arthur Simoni Daily Lobo With the recent controversy over the UNM Communication and Journalism Department losing its accreditation that it had held for more than 50 years, accreditation has become a concern among many departments across campus. The University of New Mexico currently holds institutional accreditation from the North Central Association accrediting body.

Manager expedites SUB construction

Roger Lujan, director of facilities and planning, said Monday that a new construction manager from the UNM Physical Plant will monitor the SUB construction to speed the process along. Lujan, who spoke at a Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee meeting, said that with the new manager, a new step is being made in keeping the already much-delayed Student Union Building on task.

Richardson visits the Frontier

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Richardson made a brief last-minute visit to the University area Monday to sway members of the UNM community to vote in his favor. Richardson stopped at the Frontier Monday to introduce himself and shake hands with restaurant patrons.

New Mexico Election Candidates

Gubernatorial Candidates Bill Richardson Democratic Party Richardson has said he wants a state cabinet secretary, instead of a superintendent, to oversee public schools. He opposes a voucher system. In an interview with the Daily Lobo in August, Richardson said he wants the lottery scholarship to remain unaltered.

Psi Chi honors psychology students

by Jeff Proctor Daily Lobo Fifty-four students were inducted Monday night into the UNM chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honors Society in Psychology, at the Continuing Education Building. "The ceremony gives us a chance to recognize students excelling in psychology here at UNM," said Crystal Aragon, who was recently elected president of the UNM chapter of Psi Chi.

Urban sprawl affects Southwest negatively

Discussing ways to raise awareness of their impact on the world around them Sunday, lecture panelists targeted the media and the role its outlets should play in promoting awareness of key environmental issues in the Southwest, including urban sprawl. The lecture, "Moving the Message: How to Tell the Story of the West," addressed the importance of effectively communicating the values of place in the West - the dramatic landscapes, the natural resources, the human communities - so that society will begin to make wiser choices about land use.

Professor's writing awarded

The presentation of a national award for extraordinary contributions to the field of writing has helped solidify a UNM professor's place in literary history. Rudolfo Anaya, a professor emeritus in UNM's English Department, was honored during a Zimmerman Library ceremony Friday for receiving the National Medal of Arts.

Linguistics conference offers swap of new ideas

by Jeff Proctor Daily Lobo UNM graduate students played an important role in organizing the fifth-annual High Desert Linguistics Conference, presented by students from the Linguistics Department, when it came to the University Friday and Saturday. "It is one of the better attended student-run linguistics conferences because it's casual, non-threatening and non-competitive," said Candace Maher, a sociolinguistics masters degree student.

Services extend to branches

Staff Report Actively seeking ways to provide support services, in addition to delivering degree completion and graduate programs, one program is extending its reach to serve more students - especially those in remote locations in New Mexico. UNM's Extended University program was started in January 2000 to coordinate the institution's distance education programs.

An organic certification standards program is earning national praise for reducing the confusion about the legitimacy of organic foods. The program, started by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, introduced a new set of standards for the labeling and handling of organic foods.

Students line up to donate blood

by April Hale Daily Lobo Eager donors filled the lines for the chance to donate blood - a valuable asset more appreciated in recent times. The fifth annual campus-wide blood drive, sponsored by the United Blood Services in conjunction with UNM's General Library, was organized at three different areas around campus to give students every chance to help stockpile the local emergency blood supply.

East Indian community flourishes on UNM campus

by Mira Poling Daily Lobo There is a piece of India thriving in Albuquerque today. Out of the 864 international students at UNM, 177 are from India, according to the Department of International Programs and Studies. Together they share meals and stories, hold cricket tournaments, host potlucks and celebrate holidays.

Regents OK resolutions to fund parking

Two items presented by the Finance and Facilities Committee were approved by the Board of Regents committee Wednesday during a special meeting. The board voted unanimously to adopt the Sales Resolution and Related Documents for Series 2002 A, B and C bonds and the Revised Capital Project Approval for the Cornell Parking structure.

C&J declines reaccreditation

The UNM Communication and Journalism department has withdrawn it application for reaccredidation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Members of the accreditation team were at UNM Monday and Tuesday to evaluate the department.

UNM law school School Web site gains recognition

A division of UNM's School of law earned national recognition for it innovative Web-based judicial educational programming when it was presented a national award at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. The Judicial Education Center of New Mexico, a division of the UNM School of Law's Institute of Public Law, established its Web site in 1997 in an effort to give New Mexico judges and court staff a learning tool and continuing education that aids them in making courtroom decisions.

New SUB to be worth wait, tax dollars

Members of ASUNM and other concerned groups received a guided tour of the new Student Union Building to get a glimpse of their future offices Wednesday night. The tour, led by Walt Miller, associate vice president for student development, was to provide a look at the plans for different areas of the site, setbacks they have faced and aspirations for the future of the building.

Monsters let loose in Kiva Hall

by Jeff Proctor Daily Lobo Kiva Lecture Hall was transformed from a standard classroom into a place where monsters dwell Tuesday night as documentary filmmaker Peter von Puttkamer presented his film "Monster Hunters." Von Puttkamer has traveled around the world, making documentaries and short movie series for The Learning Channel, including "Spiders" and "Sasquatch Odyssey," the film that has been called the definitive Bigfoot video.

SUB completion pushed back once again

by April Hale Daily Lobo A new finishing date for the Student Union Building was announced in a forum Tuesday that allowed frustrated student representatives to express their concerns about construction delays. The forum, sponsored by the Associated Students of UNM and the Graduate and Professional Student Association, included Vice President of Business and Finance Julie Weaks and SUB Project Manager Don Knox.

University Press director receives Medal of Honor

The director of UNM Press, the University's publisher of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and other literature, has been awarded a 2002 Medal of Honor for lifetime achievement by the Cherokee Honor Society. Luther Wilson, who is currently in his second stint as director of the press, said the organization has been able to take advantage of the strong multicultural presence at UNM by publishing works by several American Indian and Hispanic authors.
