Staff Report A prestigious UNM almunus has been selected to help lead the way for Arizona State University's law school to become a premier institution in American Indian law education. Kevin Gover, 47, who graduated cum laude from the UNM School of Law in 1981, will teach courses at the ASU College of Law's Indian Legal Program.
Members of the Albuquerque Fire Department clean up gasoline spilled after a car was rolled over on campus Friday night by a UNM art student in what was apparently some type of display art project. The incident happened in front of Carlisle Gym. Lt. Michael Young of the UNM Police Departmnent, who was the department's watch commander the night of the incident, said he could not release the name of the student because police administrators were still processing the incident's report.
During winter break, several construction projects will begin around campus that will cause road closures and changes in pedestrian routes. According to the UNM Web site, Way To Go at www.unm.edu/waytogo/bigi.html, one of the most visible of these projects will be the construction of a utility tunnel trench extension in front of Popejoy Hall that will impact drivers and pedestrians using Redondo Drive.
The UNM Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, Rho Delta will continue an initiative toward becoming a chartered organization by organizing a Holiday Gala at University House today. Kappa Delta Pi is the international honor society in education and the gala will be the first formal event that the Rho Delta chapter has had in five years, said Sue Ann Lieber, chapter president.
UNM Budget Director Curtis Porter addressed the ASUNM Senate Wednesday in a tuition forum to outline the University's stance on funding priorities and tuition credits. Porter said that students are often confused by the term tuition credit because it sounds as if the University is gaining revenue.
The ASUNM Senate wrapped up its fall session Wednesday by passing a record amount of last-minute legislation before saying goodbyes to several longtime senators. The Associated Students of UNM Senate addressed 23 appropriations bills, as student groups asked the Senate for last-minute monies to fund groups before the semester ends.
UNM police and the Albuquerque Fire Department responded to a fire call at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house Nov. 27. Michael Koller, president of the fraternity, said members called University police and the fire department after they noticed smoke coming through the floor in the fraternity house at 1811 Mesa Vista Rd.

Staff Report Popular UNM history professor Richard Berthold announced his plans to retire in a statement Monday. Berthold stated "constant harassment by persons in authority at the University" as the reason for his retirement. Berthold said in a statement that he would like to continue teaching but that his retirement will take effect at the end of this semester.
Staff Report A UNM professor is playing a key role in improving the communication strategies that can be used to help control the spread of HIV/AIDS in developing nations. Everett Rogers, a Regents' Professor in the Communication and Journalism Department, has co-written a book, Combatting AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action, that details the importance of using communication strategies to influence government policy and gender relations in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Students were subjected to some HIV/AIDS shock therapy Tuesday during World AIDS Day to help them realize just how prevalent the disease has become in society. The event, which was recognized internationally on Sunday, was held between the Duck Pond and Zimmerman Library and, according to event organizers, was to show the UNM community how close to home the epidemic is.

The Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee voted to approve the sale of 3.2 acres on UNM's south campus to TVI at its Monday meeting. The land, which is south of Coal Avenue between University Boulevard and Buena Vista Drive, will be sold to the Technical Vocational Institute for its appraised value of $545,000.

Staff Report UNM's Special Assistant for Diversity Robert Ibarra is creating an innovative "Blue Ribbon Committee," in which select faculty members will collaborate in addressing diversity issues in academic affairs on campus. The committee, whose members were picked to provide an accurate scope of the varying perspectives within the UNM community, "will work on a variety of diversity issues that include guiding special data reporting projects, enhancing traditional recruitment, promotion and retention activities, monitoring diversity tactics in the strategic plan, and advising funded research projects on diversity and promoting unique initiatives associated with a new multicultural model for diversity that is now emerging on campus," Ibarra said in a UNM press release.
Staff Report The New Mexico Alpha chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at UNM has been awarded two of the international fraternity's most prestigious awards this year. The Gold Star Award, presented to individual chapters for superior excellence in chapter operations and the Founders Trophy, presented to the best chapter of Phi Delta Theta on medium-sized campuses, are two of the highest accolades presented each year by the fraternity's general headquarters.
UNM German Studies Professor Peter Pabisch has been named the Distinguished Max Kade Research Professor, an honor that included funding to a panelist at an international conference on the cultural aspects of the German language. The conference, "Future Chances of the German Language in Eastern Europe," took place at the University of Graz in Austria in November.
