City recognizes prevention efforts

UNM has received an award from the City of Albuquerque for striving to reduce the amount of pollution within the community. The city's Public Works Department, the Albuquerque City Council, the Wastewater Utility Division, the Industrial Pretreatment Program and the Pollution Prevention Program presented UNM with the Pollution Prevention Award of Excellence on Jan.

Vocalist wins nationals

A UNM student majoring in vocal performance recently took first place in the National Opera Association's Vocal Competition in Washington, D.C. Senior Andrea Clayton attributed her success at the Jan. 18 competition to the unwavering support of family and friends, as well as the guidance of internationally acclaimed opera singer and director Marylin Tyler, who directs UNM's Opera Studies.

Physicist to provide terrorism viewpoint

Richard Wilson, a research professor of physics at Harvard University, will discuss problems with nuclear protection and safety and provide alternatives to dealing with the threat of terrorism. "A physicist knows few absolutes," Wilson said in an online abstract, "Making the country absolutely safe is not possible and attempts to do so may be counterproductive.

Transsexual files suit against UNM

A lawsuit has been filed against the Regents of the University of New Mexico as trustees for UNM Hospital for violating the New Mexico Tort Claims Act and the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. The regents are responsible for the management and control of UNM and all departments and activities, according to the lawsuit.

President search loses Archuleta

Staff Report Former UNM Board of Regents member David Archuleta resigned Friday as chairman of the Presidential Search Committee. Archuleta said that because he was no longer a member of the board -- his term expired in January -- he would step down as search chairman to allow a current member of the regents to head the committee.

University corporation chief resigns

The president and chief executive officer of the Science and Technology Corporation at UNM has announced that his resignation will take effect in April. Peter Perna, who was named to the position in October 2000, said the decision was based on his interest in starting up new ventures.

Voters to decide funding for APS, TVI board seats

UNM students with interest in TVI or APS have a chance to change the future of the two institutions by voting today. By 10 p.m., tonight, voters will have decided on a $145 million APS bond and mill levy, four seats on the APS Board of Education and four seats on Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute's Governing Board.

Off-campus branches to split

UNM's Continuing Education and Extended University are formally separating because officials believe the move will allow the University to better serve students. "Because of the number of students we're serving and the number of classes we have, it has become a very successful enterprise and it was time for us to separate the Continuing Education and the Extended University," said Jer¢nimo Dom°nguez, vice provost for Extended University.

Not all advisers qualified

UNM undergraduate students can take comfort that they are receiving the best advisement possible, although in some instances a loophole is allowing advisers to practice without meeting the minimum requirements of the job. According to the Human Resource Department's Web site, an undergraduate adviser at UNM must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field or discipline to the department they are advising and six months to one year of work experience.

Director to receive award for method to fight addiction

Robert J. Meyers will receive the 2002 Dan Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation this May for his positive reinforcement-based method of motivating chemically dependent people to seek treatment. As associate director of the Clinical Research Branch of the UNM Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction, also known as CASAA, Meyers has dedicated his life to helping people battle addiction.

Football player investigated for fake ID scandal

UNM football player Quincy Wright is being investigated by the University for allegedly using his home computer to make nine fake Oklahoma drivers licenses for other players. The case is also being reviewed by the district attorney's office. Copies of the nine licenses were found at a local Kinko's in December.

Staff Report UNM President Chris Garcia has named an Anderson Schools of Management professor as his Special Adviser to Economic Development, a position that entails encouraging, coordinating and promoting the economic development activities of campus programs and departments.

Space forum under scrutiny

UNM's annual Space Technology and Applications Forum has raised questions about whether the military nuclear research plays a part in the program. The forum is set to begin Sunday and is sponsored by UNM's Institute for Nuclear Space Power Studies.

University professor to head public

Paul Nathanson, director of the UNM School of Law's Institute of Public Law, was elected in December as chairman of the board of directors for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. "The issue is important," Nathanson said. "It's a way to have an impact.

Student awarded with high position in architecture

UNM architecture student Robert Williams was elected to the board of directors for the American Institute of Architecture Students Jan. 2. Williams, a third-year architecture student who serves as president of the UNM chapter, will represent all of the Western colleges in the United States to the national board on which five other students from other regions sit.

The only candidate named after a search for a new director of the Chicana/o Studies program at UNM said Tuesday that recent decisions regarding affirmative action and Hispanic population growth within the United States provide for unique opportunities for the program.

Senate aims to focus on faculty, staff salary raises

UNM President Chris Garcia said during the Faculty Senate meeting Tuesday that he has met with Gov. Bill Richardson recently and will support a two percent increase in staff compensation. "There seems to be at least a hopeful spirit that with the new administration will come better things for the state of New Mexico and for higher education in particular," Garcia said.

UNM Law Professor James Ellis has been named the 2002 "Lawyer of the Year" by the National Law Journal, an award he admits he never would have received without help from a tireless group of students and colleagues. Ellis received the award for successfully arguing before the U.

Multilingual classes expand cultural insight

Two UNM linguistics professors, both Fulbright Scholars, are offering courses this semester that emphasize the importance of multilingualism as an instrument to understanding foreign people and cultures. Visiting Lecturer Zouhair Maalej, a Tunisian native, has previously lectured at a British university and is working on a book titled, "The Contemporary Cognitive Metaphor Theory: Arabic Data.

Accessibility for handicap in question

UNM student Paul Smith doesn't have things easy when it comes to getting around campus. In the place he used to park near his class in the Center for the Arts sits a big hole in the ground where UNM is building the Cornell parking structure.
