Programs make best colleges list

Staff Report Seven UNM graduate programs within the college of fine arts and the schools of medicine and law have been ranked among the best in the nation this year by the U.S. News & World Report. The weekly news magazine, which according to its Web site began its annual ranking of more than 1,400 accredited colleges and universities nationwide in 1983, provides the service to aid its readers in researching how their particular school's academic program compares with those of its peers, or schools with broadly similar missions.

Meiers aims to recruit top teaching assistants

If elected president of GPSA, first-year law student James Meiers says he will help the Board of Regents and the New Mexico State Legislature to better understand the needs of graduate and professional students at UNM. In the last month and a half, Meiers has made a concerted effort to contact the regents and express his ideas for the Graduate and Professional Students Association's future, he said.

Professor gets $400,000 research grant

Staff Report Scott Tyo, a UNM electrical engineering assistant professor, has received a five-year grant worth $400,000 from the National Science Foundation to continue his research in the field of polarized light. Tyo will receive the money as a result of his winning a Faculty Early Career Development Award, also known as the CAREER Award, from the foundation.

Former chairman to be honored with book

A former UNM History Department chairman who died in 2000 will be honored today when the University presents his widow and the department with a book of essays commemorating his studies, writings and works. Gerald Nash worked at UNM for more than 30 years and is considered by many of his former colleagues to be a leading scholar in the field of the American West.

UNM assistant professor receives governor’s award

Staff Report A research assistant professor in the Biology, Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UNM has been selected as one of 20 women to receive the 2003 Governor’s Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women. Deborah Ulinski Potter, who works full time for the federal government and holds faculty appointments at UNM, is someone that women aspiring to achieve greatness in their lives can look up to, according to Adelaide Collins, president of New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering, who nominated Potter for the award.

Former professor dies in Argentina

Dinko Cvitanovic, a former UNM professor of Spanish who taught from 1973-1980, died Feb.19 from a heart attack at age 64 in Bah°a Blanca, Argentina. He is survived by his wife, Nilsa, and his son, Gast¢n Mauricio. Born in Croatia, Cvitanovic and his family immigrated to Argentina when he was very young.
