British forces in Basra greeted with acceptance

BASRA, Iraq (AP) — British forces took control of the heart of Basra on Monday, met by few pockets of resistance and greeted by hundreds of people who shook their hands and welcomed them to Iraq’s second-largest city. Royal Marine commandos seized a vacant, pink-hued marble palace belonging to President Saddam Hussein.

Plans on finishing off Iraqi government in play

HILLSBOROUGH, Northern Ireland (AP) — With Baghdad under siege, President Bush and ally Tony Blair discussed plans Monday for finishing off Saddam Hussein’s government and resolving differences over postwar Iraq. “The hostilities phase is coming to a conclusion,” said Secretary of State Colin Powell, accompanying Bush aboard Air Force One to this British territory with its own decades-old history of violence.

Campus to be pouring Fair Trade Coffee soon

by Jodi Hunley Daily Lobo The Fair Trade Initiative, a UNM group advocating better treatment of farmers, said at a meeting on Monday that Aramark would begin serving Fair Trade Coffee on campus as soon as shipments arrived. Fair Trade coffee will be served at Dane Smith Hall and the SUB tent, said Brandt Milstein, the group’s president.

Border patrol takes more than 1,000 pounds of pot ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Nearly 1,300 pounds of marijuana were seized by border patrol agents during five separate traffic stops over the weekend. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection announced Monday that the largest bust included 703 pounds of marijuana that was hidden in a load of frozen food being transported by a tractor-trailer.

Programs make best colleges list

Staff Report Seven UNM graduate programs within the college of fine arts and the schools of medicine and law have been ranked among the best in the nation this year by the U.S. News & World Report. The weekly news magazine, which according to its Web site began its annual ranking of more than 1,400 accredited colleges and universities nationwide in 1983, provides the service to aid its readers in researching how their particular school's academic program compares with those of its peers, or schools with broadly similar missions.

Meiers aims to recruit top teaching assistants

If elected president of GPSA, first-year law student James Meiers says he will help the Board of Regents and the New Mexico State Legislature to better understand the needs of graduate and professional students at UNM. In the last month and a half, Meiers has made a concerted effort to contact the regents and express his ideas for the Graduate and Professional Students Association's future, he said.

Professor gets $400,000 research grant

Staff Report Scott Tyo, a UNM electrical engineering assistant professor, has received a five-year grant worth $400,000 from the National Science Foundation to continue his research in the field of polarized light. Tyo will receive the money as a result of his winning a Faculty Early Career Development Award, also known as the CAREER Award, from the foundation.

Former chairman to be honored with book

A former UNM History Department chairman who died in 2000 will be honored today when the University presents his widow and the department with a book of essays commemorating his studies, writings and works. Gerald Nash worked at UNM for more than 30 years and is considered by many of his former colleagues to be a leading scholar in the field of the American West.

Local Gulf War Syndrome study team asks for more funds ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Albuquerque medical researchers are asking the U.S. Army to continue funding their investigation of Gulf War Syndrome. The team from Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute has already published the results of its first four-year study of the long term effects of low-level exposure to sarin gas.

UNM's occupational therapy courses rank

April is national occupational therapy month and UNM is doing its part to provide the best occupational therapists possible. UNM's Occupational Therapy Graduate Program, offered through the School of Medicine, is an accredited program that began three years ago, said Terry Crowe, the founding director of the program and a medical professor.

Staff Report Gov. Bill Richardson named the new member of UNM's Board of Regents Thursday, appointing a prominent business and civil leader to fill the vacancy left by the death of Reg. Highjackers threaten to kill ferry passengers HAVANA (AP) — Armed hijackers seized a ferry off Cuba’s coast Wednesday and threatened to toss passengers overboard if they cannot go to the United States, setting off a negotiating drama on the high seas.
