Eaves appointed to Board of Regents

Staff Report Gov. Bill Richardson named the new member of UNM's Board of Regents Thursday, appointing a prominent business and civil leader to fill the vacancy left by the death of Reg. Donald Salazar. John "Mel" Eaves, an Albuquerque lawyer and former state legislator, is faced with several immediate tasks, including helping select a new president of UNM.

Soldiers' student loan payments put on hold

Staff Report U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., announced this week that the House of Representatives easily approved legislation designed to ensure U.S. military reservists called to active duty are not forced to make payments on student loans while deployed overseas.

One in four college students has chlamydia, according to a 2001 survey conducted at UNM, and college-aged people are at greater risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases than any other members of the population.

UNM's occupational therapy courses rank

April is national occupational therapy month and UNM is doing its part to provide the best occupational therapists possible. UNM's Occupational Therapy Graduate Program, offered through the School of Medicine, is an accredited program that began three years ago, said Terry Crowe, the founding director of the program and a medical professor.

Local Gulf War Syndrome study team asks for more funds ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Albuquerque medical researchers are asking the U.S. Army to continue funding their investigation of Gulf War Syndrome. The team from Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute has already published the results of its first four-year study of the long term effects of low-level exposure to sarin gas.

Highjackers threaten to kill ferry passengers HAVANA (AP) — Armed hijackers seized a ferry off Cuba’s coast Wednesday and threatened to toss passengers overboard if they cannot go to the United States, setting off a negotiating drama on the high seas. The FBI said the ferry was drifting in international waters about 60 miles off Key West and was sending hostage negotiators to the scene by helicopter to rendezvous with a U.

Greek leaders travel to leadership council

Members of the UNM Inter-Fraternity and Panhellenic Councils will look to pick up new ideas for recruiting, programming and increasing diversity at the Western Regional Greek Leadership Conference April 4-5. UNM will send a delegation made up of executive members from both councils, led by presidents Josh Parsons and Jennifer French, to the weekend conference in Burlingame, Calif.

Program toughens laws against graffiti

Vandals looking to express themselves by coating graffiti on UNM property should expect to suffer stern consequences if they are caught and convicted, said Randy Boeglin, UNM’s dean of students. “It’s illegal, plain and simple,” Boeglin said. “It has no aesthetic value and anyone who considers pursuing such an activity on campus is taking an incredible risk with their academic future here at UNM.

Former professor dies in Argentina

Dinko Cvitanovic, a former UNM professor of Spanish who taught from 1973-1980, died Feb.19 from a heart attack at age 64 in Bah°a Blanca, Argentina. He is survived by his wife, Nilsa, and his son, Gast¢n Mauricio. Born in Croatia, Cvitanovic and his family immigrated to Argentina when he was very young.

UNM assistant professor receives governor’s award

Staff Report A research assistant professor in the Biology, Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UNM has been selected as one of 20 women to receive the 2003 Governor’s Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women. Deborah Ulinski Potter, who works full time for the federal government and holds faculty appointments at UNM, is someone that women aspiring to achieve greatness in their lives can look up to, according to Adelaide Collins, president of New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering, who nominated Potter for the award.

U.S. tensions with Turkey increasing

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) The United States is withdrawing warplanes from a Turkish air base that has been used for patrols over northern Iraq and sending them to the Persian Gulf for the war, U.S. officials said Tuesday, a sign of the growing distance between Washington and Ankara.

Advising association selects UNM director

by Jodi Hunley Daily Lobo A UNM program director has been selected as a member of the board of directors for a national organization influencing advisement at colleges and universities across the country. Elaine Borrelli, director of engineering student programs, will be working on the board of directors for the National Academic Advising Association in order to improve the undergraduate experience at UNM.

Chavez proposes stricter sex laws

Mayor Martin Chavez defended a measure aimed at increasing the severity of registration laws for criminal sex offenders at a panel discussion at the UNM School of Law Tuesday. In addition to the mayor, Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, former State Supreme Court Justice Gene Franchini and American Civil Liberties Union Treasurer Tova Indritz also participated in the discussion.

Clauve recipients have senate connections

UNM Dean of Students Randy Boeglin said that this year's winners of the Clauve Outstanding Senior Award are five of the University's most accomplished students in the classroom as well as the community. The 2003 recipients are Rosalyn Nguyen, Heather Gabel, Gil Morales, Sarah McKinney and Angie Wilcox.

Newly appointed UNM Regent Donald H. Salazar, 56, died Friday after a battle with thyroid cancer that had spread throughout his body. Salazar, who was a lawyer in the Santa Fe law firm of Rubin, Katz, Salazar, Alley, Rouse and Herdman, was appointed by Gov.

Premed organization inducts UNM chapter

In a ritualistic ceremony Monday, the Alpha Epsilon Delta premedical honor society adopted its newest chapter at UNM and initiated its first members into the organization. Charles Rose, an AED alumnus from Brigham Young University, presented the 12 premedical students with their certificates and said they should feel proud.

Attempted theft reported at College of Fine Arts Campus police were sent to the College of Fine Arts March 18 after an employee alerted them to an attempted break-in. The employee told police that an unknown person tried to break into a large file cabinet to steal toner and computer accessories.
