Candidate explains UNM goals

UNM presidential candidate Edward John Ray said all the essential ingredients needed to make the University nationally competitive are in place, the only thing missing is a president to bring them all together. Ray, who began a two-day visit to UNM Monday in order to become acclimated with the concerns of the community and the issues that exist on campus, spoke to a crowd of less than 10 people about the similarities between UNM and Ohio State University, where he is the executive vice president, provost and a professor of economics.

College paper shut down for printing profanity

by Tania deLuzuriaga FSView & Florida Flambeau Florida State University (U-WIRE) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - One of Florida's oldest college newspaper was shut down this week and the entire editorial staff fired after publishing a profanity-filled April Fool's Day issue that included racist jokes and a sex column advocating rape and domestic violence.

ASUNM presidential candidate Mahad Ahmed, who is running with the Cherries to Silver campaign, said that the objective behind the group's unorthodox campaign is to break away from the conventional strategies of ASUNM and focus on improving the overall college experience.

Sen. Amanda Sims, the Horizon slate candidate for vice president of ASUNM, said if re-elected, she would use her experience coupled with new ideas to serve students. "My experience as a senator and as finance chair has given me a lot of interaction with students," Sims said.

Current ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska said if re-elected, her experience this year gives her the ability to "hit the ground running" to better serve students. Onuska, running with the Horizon slate, would be the first Associated Students of UNM president to serve consecutive terms since Alberto Solis, who served from 1994-96.

Branch director down to 4 finalists

Staff Report After a nationwide, five-month search that attracted more than 50 applicants, UNM Provost Brian Foster announced on April 8 a list of four finalists for the UNM-Gallup branch executive director position. "The search committee worked well together and, along with the national advertising campaign, put together a good pool," UNM Deputy Provost Richard Holder said.

Freshman Chris Ashcraft, who is running for ASUNM Senate on the Horizon slate, said his new ideas and fresh perspective would make him a valuable asset to the student government. "I think that, right out of the box, I could really help some of the people who have been in there awhile," Ashcraft said.

Successful UNM graduate

A UNM alumnus who started his own successful business consulting famous NFL coaches and players advised UNM students Monday how to create a successful career. Todd Greene, who is the founder of the Todd Greene Agency, an international sports speaker's bureau and graduate of the Communication and Journalism Department, gave advice and fielded questions regarding careers in communications and business during a conference call in one of the department's Business and Professional Speaking class Monday.

Survey to weigh N.M. opinion on Iraqi war

Officials at the Institute for Public Policy at UNM expect to have the results of a survey they are conducting regarding New Mexicans' opinions of the war in Iraq within a week. "We are looking for New Mexicans' point of view toward the war," said Amelia Rouse, deputy director of the institute.

ASUNM: Adrian Vega

Adrian "Tio" Vega said his communication skills and "lead by example" approach make him the students' best choice for the next president of ASUNM. "I'm a friendly guy; more than willing to help anyone who asks," Vega said. Vega, a current Associated Students of UNM senator who is running on the Vision slate, added that those already involved in student government, in addition to newcomers, would be able to follow his lead in addressing important campus issues.

Spring Storm showers community

Abby Hanson, executive director of Spring Storm, asked the hundreds of volunteers gathered at University Stadium to kick off the event dedicated to community service.

SUB to officially open this summer

UNM administrators have named the restaurants that will fill the SUB, as well as the project's new completion date of July 1 - one that administrators say they are confident will be met. Walt Miller, associate vice president of UNM Student Development, said the eight SUB eateries will offer a variety of food including everything from the super healthy to french fries and hamburgers.

ASUNM: Carlos Guillen

Carlos Guillen, who is running for ASUNM Senate on the Horizon slate, said he wants to establish a series of mid-semester "tell-alls," where students and other campus organizations can voice their concerns to the student government. "I formed that goal for our slate," Guillen said.

ASUNM senatorial candidate Craig Burgess, who is running as a member of the Horizon slate, said that if elected he would want to change UNM students' perception of the dormitories and the experience of living on campus. "UNM really goes out of its way to provide the best on-campus living conditions possible and living on campus is something that has gotten a bad reputation," Burgess said.

Kugler grabs president's seat in GPSA after 2nd try

Aaron Kugler, a second-year law student who ran for GPSA president last year and lost to Lorena Olmos, has been elected as the leader for the Graduate and Professional Student Association next year. "It's what I always wanted," Kugler said. He added that name recognition caused by his previous campaign helped.

Sophomore Michelle Heidbrink is running for re-election to the ASUNM Senate because she said she brings a unique viewpoint to the students. "I'm an out-of-state student so I have a little bit different perspective," said Heidbrink, who is running with the Horizon slate.

Workshops aim to improve

by Erin Raterman Daily Lobo A series of UNM spring semester workshops designed to help teaching assistants become better educators is underway with its second installment beginning today. The workshops are organized by the Teaching Assistance Resource Center and funded through UNM's Department of Academic Affairs.
