State N.M. uses fire protection funds on general budget ALBQUERQUE (AP) - Nearly half the state's fire departments miss or barely meet the minimum insurance industry standard for fire protection, yet state lawmakers divert funds from the departments every year, according to officials and industry ratings.
The Integrative Medicine Department at UNM Hospital combines complementary and alternative medicine with conventional Western medicine to create more options for patients, hospital administrators say. Paul Roth, dean of UNM's School of Medicine, said complementary and alternative medicine includes treatments such as herbal remedies, yoga, acupuncture and massage, and although use of these methods dates back to ancient times, their use in modern medicine is relatively new.

UNMPD 12 illegally parked cars towed during Pit event During the Gathering of the Nations event at The Pit Saturday, UNM police told United Towing to tow 12 vehicles that were blocking 12 other vehicles that were legally parked. Police contacted the UNM facilities manager and assistant facilities manager and they advised campus police to have the vehicles towed.
ASUNM has been advocating the creation of a Prep Week immediately before finals when no new course material is introduced because students say it will give them much-needed time to catch up on their studies. Students support a Prep Week, according to a poll taken by ASUNM during undergraduate elections on April 16.
Staff Report A UNM history professor has been named as the recipient of an annual award honoring U.S. President Herbert Hoover and the time he spent in public office. David Farber, who has been a professor of history at UNM since 1997, will receive the 2002 Herbert Hoover Book Award, which honors the best scholarly book published during the calendar year on any aspect of American history during 1914-64, the years of Hoover's political career.

The owner of a Lobo sports merchandise store in The Pit is calling a robbery that netted nearly $2,800 worth of clothes a "shoplifting." The robbery took place just over two weeks ago at the Lobo Store inside The Pit, 1111 University Blvd. SE. Greg Edgeington, owner of the store and president of Graphic Industries, the parent company of the Lobo Store which owns college merchandise stores on university campuses across the country, said the employee who was working during the robbery did get a little scared, but was not injured "Since it happened, they decided to add two extra cameras," Edgeington said.
U.S. men die on average almost five years before women and that gap is widening, according to a recent article in a medical journal which said that the disparity is becoming a silent health crisis.
