High enrollment no burden

by A. John Garcia Daily Lobo With near record enrollment at universities nationwide, many schools are facing the problem of overcrowding in their core courses. UNM officials insist, however, that congestion is not an issue at the University. "There are a lot of universities around the country facing this problem," said Reed Dasenbrock, dean of UNM's College of Arts and Sciences.

Human Resources gets new home

Staff Report In an attempt to streamline services for UNM employees and job applicants, the Department of Human Resources is set to open a new "one-stop shop" at the beginning of next week. The Human Resource Service Center, at the corner of Lomas and University Boulevards, will be a big step forward for the department, said Susan Carkeek, director of Human Resources.

Credit card companies target students, pt. 1

As UNM students return to class this fall, they can expect to be greeted by the familiar sights, sounds and temptations of credit card solicitors, a growing trend at colleges and universities throughout the nation. Kelly Rote, a communications manager for Consumer Credit Counseling, said her national credit counseling agency continues to see an increase in the number of recent college graduates seeking help with out-of-control debt.

Program provides mentorship

by Anita Ward Daily Lobo Wise, a local school-based mentoring program, is looking for UNM students who are willing to give an hour a week to help underprivileged children. The nonprofit program, organized by Youth Development, Inc., provides an opportunity for the children, grades K-12, to spend time with people of all ages and experience things that they otherwise wouldn't, said Sally Sosa, the program's coordinator.

Freshman class may be largest ever at UNM

Staff Report The unofficial numbers are in and they show that UNM is going to have its largest freshman class in history, slightly more than 3,000. "It looks like a record, but either way, this class will certainly be one of the largest ever," said Cynthia Stuart, director of admissions.

Dorm occupancy increases

On-campus housing is about 94 percent full this semester, up roughly 100 students from 2002. But housing officials say they were expecting the dorms to be closer to capacity. "I would have thought we'd have been fuller," said Randy Boeglin, dean of students and director of residence life.

The new school year has come and worries about transportation are big concerns for many UNM students. UNM students who live in the Sun Village Apartments, however, can breathe a little easier when it comes to finding a ride to and from school.

Common Greek jargon defined for the masses

Staff Report In 1915, Pi Kappa Alpha was the first Greek organization established at UNM. Since then, the Greek community has expanded to include more than 600 members in 11 fraternities and sororities. As Greek life continues to flourish at the University, so does its lingo.

Greeks recruit new blood

UNM's Greek community is looking forward to a prosperous recruitment of new members this fall, and everyone involved agrees the bi-annual event is crucial in sustaining the traditions they have started at UNM. "Fall recruitment is historically more productive for Greek organizations because of the large number of incoming freshman and the fact that it is the start of a new year and people are looking for ways to get involved on campus," said Josh Parsons, president of UNM's Intrafraternity Council and member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Students wait for virus test results

The Student Health Center has tested three students for West Nile Virus in recent days; the results, which take about two weeks to process, are still pending. Practitioners at the center determined that the students could be at risk, said Beverly Kloeppel, associate director of the center.

New director wants academic progress

A committee representing Chicana/o Studies has decided to appoint a UNM professor to be the program's interim director while details of a potential national search are hammered out by University administrators. Enrique Lamadrid, a professor in the Spanish and Portuguese Department, accepted the appointment from the program's steering committee late in the spring semester.

ID cards used as cash

The new SUB is not only giving students a variety of eating options, it is also contributing to the way students buy goods and services on campus. Now students can use their Lobo ID cards, obtained at the SUB, as cash cards, called the Lobo Cash Card System.

McDonald's to tow vehicles

The McDonald's restaurant at the corner of Yale Boulevard and Central Avenue is no longer a safe-haven for students looking for free parking near campus. The franchise, fed up with UNM students parking on its property for extended periods of time, signed a contract with a local towing company last week to begin ridding the lot of the freeloading parkers.

Department under investigation

The Foreign Languages and Literatures Department is being audited after concerns have been raised that several department members erroneously manipulated time sheets and University purchase orders for personal gain. The audits, being conducted by UNM's Internal Audit Department in conjunction with the College of Arts and Sciences, are investigating claims that staff and faculty made fraudulent purchases over an undetermined time period.
