A UNM student organization may have been guilty of giving Albuquerque Journal readers the wrong impression Thursday. The UNM chapter of the Planners Network, an organization trying to get students involved in "progressive governmental planning," published the address of the School of Architecture and Planning and one of its telephone numbers in an advertisement it sponsored urging readers to vote against the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County unification election.

Foreign student enrollment falls

Following a national trend, UNM's international student enrollment decreased this semester and officials said planned increases in federal scrutiny may lower the number even further. The number of international students admitted to UNM this fall dipped to 149 - down from the 223 enrolled last year, according to the Office of International Programs and Studies.

Student groups reach out

Children, dressed as everything from ninjas to fairies, filled the halls of the Martineztown House of Neighborly Service Friday for a Halloween party organized by three UNM organizations. Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars sponsored the party for the children who live and go to school in the area, most of whom come from poverty, said Andrea Otero, president of Phi Eta Sigma.

A line of 19 people, with questions in hand, stretched through the SUB Ballroom and into the hall, waiting to address a seven member panel consisting of three UNM regents, the presidents of both University student governments as well as the presidents of Faculty Senate and Staff Council.

Dolores Huerta, a native New Mexican who worked with such revolutionaries as Julio Cesar Chavez, spoke to a crowd of more than 100 at the SUB about the importance of protecting workers' rights and securing a level of treatment in all organizations, including the University.

Permit forgeries plague UNM

People parking illegally on campus with forged parking permits is a big problem at UNM, said Clovis Acosta, director of the Parking and Transportation Services department. Between 200-300 of the phony permits are confiscated from cars in University parking lots every semester, according to Parking and Transportation Services department numbers.
