Regents plan for Legislature

Top UNM officials are gearing up for what so far appears to be an uphill battle with the state Legislature in January to fulfill the University's legislative priorities. One major topic at Tuesday's Board of Regents meeting was a rift between what UNM wants and what the state may give regarding salary raises for faculty and staff and tuition increases.

Regional anesthesia aids patients

Patients who undergo major surgical orthopedic procedures can now recover at home instead of at the hospital. Thanks to the UNM Outpatient Surgery and Imagining Service, also called OSIS, patients now have the option of choosing regional anesthesia over other methods.

Electric cars to assist security

UNM police and security officers are banking on a $30,000 investment they hope will help them to better patrol and secure the campus. The cars, Chrysler Gems, are powered entirely by 72-volt electric motors that can travel as far as 40 miles on a single charge and can go as fast as 25 miles per hour.

Students struggle to pay back loans

Economic uncertainties, a diminishing job market and rising tuition costs are being blamed for the second student loan default rate in 10 years this year, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Default rates - the proportion of students failing to repay their college loans on time - rose nationally to 5.

Donation to attract top-notch lecturer

Staff Report UNM's History Department has received a $100,000 endowment to attract a top-rate candidate to become a lecturer in ancient history. Funding from the Gorham Endowed Faculty Lectureship will go toward travel expenses, research costs and professional development, said History Chairwoman Jane Slaughter.

Contractor won't face late fees

It is unlikely Gerald Martin General Contractor will face any penalties for the late completion of the Cornell Parking Structure, officials say. It is also highly unlikely, however, it will meet the project's latest completion date of mid-December. Roger Lujan, director of facility planning at UNM, said while the University reserves the right to impose punitive penalties on contracts that don't meet deadline or that aren't completed to the level expected, he hopes it doesn't come to that in this case.

Greeks grow in diversity, numbers

Since 2002, UNM's Greek community has seen an explosion of growth. Not only has the number of Greeks on campus increased from 556 to 716, but several culturally based organizations have sprung up, including one sorority that only exists at UNM. "Our goal is to make the Greek community represent the student body as a whole," said Allison Holcomb, Greek Life adviser at UNM.

Players barred from bowl game

The Lobo football team likely will be two players light when it looks for redemption in the Las Vegas Bowl against Oregon State University Dec. 24. Head coach Rocky Long suspended starting wide receiver Adrian Boyd and backup receiver/special teams player Jonathan Harrell for academic reasons.

New faces to lead Greeks

UNM's Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils are full of new faces, but their missions remain the same. Cari Crappell, the incoming 2004 Panhellenic president and Kevin Stevenson, who will assume the role of Interfraternity president for the next year, both said they want to improve fraternity and sorority relations.

Project promotes clean energy

The goal of Project Green Bus, sponsored by the UNM College Green Party, is to raise funds to convert a 15-passenger diesel bus to run on vegetable oil. Fund raising for the project took place at "Hanging with the Greens" on Friday night in the SUB.

Professor elected president of ASHA

Staff Report The chairwoman of UNM's Speech and Hearing Sciences Department will begin overseeing most of the nation's speech and language doctors in January. Amy Wohlert was elected president of the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Man charged in Nob Hill attack

For the third time in the past six months a transient turned the Nob Hill Shopping Center into a crime scene Friday, leaving two people hospitalized and many local residents worried for their safety. Shortly after 11 a.m., Amy Fjerstad, owner of Bambini's, a child clothing store in Nob Hill, was robbed and stabbed six times by Peter Murphy, a "transient who has had past run-ins with police," according to police.

'Spirit of Giving' helps women in need

Staff Report UNM employees are getting into the holiday spirit by donating their time and effort to one local nonprofit organization. UNM's Advancement Division, which is coordinating this year's annual "Spirit of Giving" campaign, decided to focus its efforts on the Women's Community Association after researching many organizations in the Albuquerque area, said Hilary Jetty, a development specialist for the Advancement Division.

Hispanic aid program gets new funding

A UNM program designed to lower the dropout rate for Hispanic students in kindergarten through college will soon be expanding its efforts, thanks to a national grant. The Engaging Latino Communities for Education Program, ENLACE, was recognized by the Lumina Foundation earlier this month for its retention efforts with minority students at Albuquerque Public Schools, TVI and UNM.

Flu season arrives early on campus

The Student Health Center has seen far more patients - and earlier in the season - with flu-like symptoms this year than in years past, a UNM official said. Between 90 and 100 patients are coming to the center every day, and a majority of them are showing signs of having influenza, Beverly Kloeppel, the center's interim director, said.
