Finance manager eager to begin job

UNM's new director of Resource Management will be leaving the sunny beaches of Hawaii's Big Island for the dry, high-altitude climate of Albuquerque. And he actually seems to be happy about it. "Frankly, I've had my eye on New Mexico opportunities," said John Whittaker, who will take over Academic Affair's top financial post in January.

UNM revives staff education program

After more than a year without, UNM staff members will once again be able to extend their roles on campus and become students as well as employees, thanks to a program that has been reinstated by Human Resources. Staff as Students is a program that offers staff members the opportunity to take classes at UNM.

Local Cousins plead guilty in fatal stabbing near UNM ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A teenager has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a UNM student during a party. Valentino Jaramillo, 18, also pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of aggravated battery-great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and escape from a peace officer.

Crafts fair makes grand return

Deborah La More and the ASUNM Crafts Fair have a lot in common, including University affiliation, a love of art and a hiatus from both. La More brought about 35 examples of her work - framed amalgamations of painting and photography - from her home in Santa Fe to sell at the University where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1994.

UNMPD fails to respond to call for help

Scared and trapped outside of a locked door at UNM's Science and Technology Park, Stephanie Johnston carefully recorded the license plate of a pickup truck belonging to a man she says was exposing himself. In an anxious attempt to report the crime and ensure her safety, Johnston called APD and was transferred to the UNM Police Department at about 3:30 p.

Tragedy strikes hospital ER

Four children died in UNM Hospital's Emergency Room over the weekend, and at least one of the cases is being investigated as a possible flu death, a spokeswoman from the New Mexico Department of Health said Monday. "It's still too early to tell" if the child died from influenza, Health Department spokeswoman Beth Velasquez said.

UNM's Health Sciences Center is helping develop technology for the medical industry that is bringing training to a whole new level and gaining some stardom in the process. The center is one of only a handful of medical schools in the country that uses Human Patient Stimulation Technology, computer controlled mannequins designed to simulate human physiology.

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Ch†vez made an impromptu visit to UNM Monday to open the lines of communication with who he calls the most important people at UNM -students. Sapien, doctors to assist infants

Staff Report An associate professor of Emergency Medicine from UNM will soon be playing an integral role in improving medical programs and services for the nation's pregnant women and infants. Through his recently appointed role to the Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality of the Health Resources and Services Administration, Robert Sapien, also a pediatrics professor at UNM, will collaborate with doctors across the country to reduce infant mortality.

Cell phone rules change, phone numbers don't

Cell phone users got a break Monday, thanks to national rules that went into effect allowing them to switch service providers without changing their number. The rules, implemented by the Federal Communications Commission, are designed to give customers greater flexibility and place more accountability on the shoulders of the service providers, according to the commission's Web site.

UNM polo team makes a splash

Chartered just this year, the water polo team came to be after a few friends put their heads together to come up with a way to "provide students with an opportunity to play water polo at a collegiate level," according to Student Activities Web site.

Donations rise at three state universities ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Private donations to New Mexico's three research universities have climbed despite tough times for charities nationwide. The University of New Mexico raised $35.4 million in 2002, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which publishes the annual "Philanthropy 400" national ranking of charitable groups.
