UNM joins germ research team

Staff Report UNM's Health Sciences Center has joined a national coalition to develop methods of detecting illnesses before symptoms develop. The HSC, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have become part of a biosignatures consortium.

Regents at odds over tuition rise

UNM's Board of Regents, trying to decipher a still uncertain legislative future, might be forced to agree to a 4 percent tuition increase. The state Legislature has proposed the 4 percent increase after deciding not to support the Commission on Higher Education's suggested 3.

City cracks down on unsecured loads

The Albuquerque community, having grown tired of replacing windshields damaged by debris thrown from semitrailers and fearing the big rigs as they rumble through the city, is fighting back. Citizen complaints regarding unsafe semitrailers, as many as five per week, have prompted the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to begin cracking down on semis found with unsecured loads or carrying too much weight, said Peter Olson, communications director for the department.

Frankly funny

by Rachael Alaimo-Monson Daily Lobo Best selling author and political satirist Al Franken shared the stage Sunday night at Popejoy Hall with an orange construction cone supporting a sign proclaiming it a "Free Speech Zone." Franken addressed a wide range of topics but spent a good portion of his hour-long speech on the shortcomings of the current Bush Administration.

Rivals unite to increase young voters

Two campus groups will put their political differences aside Tuesday to increase the voter turnout among college students. UNM's College Greens and College Republicans will stage a cooperative voter registration drive as part of the national campaign, the New Voters Project.

Officer, APD face rape, battery charges (AP) - The Albuquerque Police Department and a former officer who is accused of rape and battery while on duty face three civil lawsuits. Christopher Chase, 29, has been indicted on 32 counts including criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, aggravated battery and kidnapping.

City cleans up Nob Hill neighborhood

A violent 2003 in Albuquerque's Nob Hill neighborhood has prompted area residents and businesses to band together in an attempt to clean up the district's image and rid it of crime. The historic neighborhood, which borders the UNM campus, was the site of four violent incidents between March and December, resulting in two deaths, the firebombing of an area eatery and the stabbing and attempted robbery of the owner of a baby clothing store.

Universities bid for national labs

Staff Report Two of the country's largest universities are preparing to square off for ownership rights of one of New Mexico's most recognizable inhabitants - Los Alamos National Laboratories. The University of Texas announced plans Wednesday to spend upwards of $500,000 on a possible bid for the labs' contracts.

Johnson Field revitalized

The northern half of UNM's Johnson Field will be inaccessible for several months starting this week as the University's Grounds and Landscaping crew attempts to nurse it back to health after years of rough treatment. The revitalization process will begin with exterminating troublesome crab grass from the area, said Gary Smith, associate director of UNM's Environmental Services Department.

Armed man arrested at UNM Bookstore UNMPD arrested a man on Jan. 23 at the UNM Bookstore for unlawful possession of an illegal firearm, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct. An officer saw John Whatley entering the bookstore with a noticeable lump under his jacket.

Groups lobby to save Lottery funds

The New Mexico Lottery Success Scholarship's financial surplus came under fire Wednesday from state officials looking to dip into the program's funds to strengthen other programs, officials say. The lottery scholarship's surplus is at about $50 million, said Jennifer Onuska, president of ASUNM.

The University recently joined a national mental health coalition, made up of experts from around the country, in an attempt to provide the services college students need to deal with depression.

Career expo aids job search

UNM's Career Services Department played host to businesses and organizations from around the world during Career Expo 2004 Tuesday, an annual event designed to help students learn the intricacies of the job market. The expo, now in its 28th year, provided community members a rare opportunity to feel out the current job market and talk to potential employers about the career paths they are hoping to pursue, said Leslye Ellison, director of Career Services.

As part of a continuing series of exhibits in Zimmerman Library's Hertzstein Latin American Reading Room, a series of ancient manuscripts from the area is giving visitors a chance to see how the early Mexican people recorded their history.
