Hookah trend finds niche in Nob Hill

The hookah pipe is still a mystery to many people, but Adam Moffett and Jonathan Zamora are working hard to expose the world to their hip way of smoking tobacco. Originally from the Middle East, a hookah is an intricate water pipe that is used to smoke "molassed" tobacco called shisha.

Union wages approved

In a split decision that brought a standing ovation from some and sighs of disgust from others, UNM's Board of Regents voted Monday to unionize the construction of the University Hospital's west wing. The regents voted 4-2 in favor of implementing the proposed project labor agreement that will for the first time demand union-style wage guarantees and benefits for a construction project at UNM.

Suspicious highway death investigated by police BERNALILLO, N.M. (AP) - State police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a 23-year-old Albuquerque woman who was found along Interstate 25 near Bernalillo after either falling or being thrown from a car.

Spring break deals may dupe students

Travel agencies use deceptive marketing techniques to rip off students looking to travel over spring break, according to a report by the New Mexico's Public Interest Research Group. The report, "Spring Broke: How to Avoid a Spring Break Ripoff," which came out this month, examines spring break packages and how students can be duped into paying hidden costs.

Mr. and Ms. Black UNM crowned

For the first time ever, there is a Mr. and Ms. Black UNM. Before a packed SUB Ballroom Saturday evening, UNM's Black Student Union deemed Kevin Walton and Vanessa Kidd the most deserving of the titles from the three men and four women who sought the crown.

CIRT warns of campus virus threat

UNM's central computer system has remained under attack from several viruses for most of the semester, and University officials say they are relying on diligence by community members to fight the problem. Scott Parker, a technical support analyst at UNM's Computer Information Resources Technology Department, said unlike past viruses that had the ability to duplicate themselves once inside a computer system and infect an entire network, the Beagle and Netsky viruses are much less sophisticated.

John Kerry on Sunday accused President Bush of "stonewalling" separate inquiries into the events leading up to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks, as well as into the intelligence that suggested Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

APD sued by UNM couple

Apparently, it doesn't always pay to be a Good Samaritan. Just ask Margaret Lopez, 24, and Jake Hochhalter, 22, UNM seniors who have spent the past five months engaged in a legal struggle they say they don't belong in. And, according to the lawsuit the couple has filed against two Albuquerque Police officers, it was their willingness to help their fellow man that landed them in the precarious situation.

UNM seizes MWC title

The UNM women's basketball team came from behind to beat the CSU Rams 59-52 on Saturday at The Pit and became co-Mountain West Conference Champions. The Lobos share the title with the Utah Utes. UNM has not won a women's basketball title since the 1998-99 season.

Dunlap may face lawsuit

Lobbyist Linda Siegle says local attorney Paul Becht doesn't yet have grounds to sue Victoria Dunlap, the county clerk who issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples Feb. 20 in Sandoval County. Becht, a candidate for governor and former state senator, sent a letter dated Feb.

Program offers aid to migrant workers

In some areas of New Mexico, typical work is farm work. UNM's College Assistance Migrant Program requires that students come from rural farming areas. To qualify for the program, students or their guardians need to have spent a minimum of 75 days as a migrant or seasonal farm worker within the last 24 months.

TVI teacher claims he was harassed by UNM police

An instructor at TVI who said he was merely conducting research at UNM said he is outraged with the treatment he received from the UNM Police Department. Greg Ozimek, an economics instructor at TVI, said he was harassed and questioned by two UNM police officers at his home last month after he sought information through a Public Information Request Form about the number of international students in Graduate Assistant positions at UNM.

Lobo women move into first-place tie

Melissa Forest had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the Lobos' route of the Wyoming Cowgirls, 58-39 Thursday at The Pit. Forest went 6 of 8 from the floor and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line and did not miss a shot until there was 3:46 remaining. UNM head coach Don Flanagan said Forest plays best in physical games.

Noise permits prevent party fines

A free permit available through the city's Environmental Health Department can save party planners hundreds of dollars in fines and troublesome run-ins with police. Noise variance permits, which allow for noise levels of up to 80 decibels or about the equivalent of a loud home stereo, ensure that loud house parties will not be interrupted by neighbors or police, said Susan Gallegos of the Environmental Health Department.

Athletes inspire literacy for children

UNM is doing its part to motivate local elementary and middle school students to improve their literacy skills. The Read with the Lobos Program, spearheaded by UNM's Marketing Department and sponsored by Nextel, helps motivate young students to improve their reading abilities by rewarding their success with tickets to University athletic events, said Liz Tamol, an administrative assistant with the marketing department and organizer of the program.

Study:Gatorade no better than water

Add a few ingredients and water becomes Gatorade, but its hydrating effects may not be the same afterward. For the past five years, Robert Robergs, a UNM exercise physiologist, has been researching Gatorade's claims that the sports drink is superior to water in its ability to rehydrate the body.

TVI offers free tax help to elderly

Staff Report For the past 30 years, Albuquerque's low-income and elderly residents have had one less worry as TVI accounting students have prepared their taxes for them free of charge. TAX HELP NM, a collaborative program between the Technical Vocational Institute and PNM, allows the schools aspiring business students a chance to gain real world experience in their chosen profession while lending a hand to those in need, said Fred Gordon, the program's supervisor in a news release.
