Pond gets spring cleaning

The UNM Grounds and Landscaping crew spent its spring break cleaning the Duck Pond after years of abuse by passersby who inadvertently muddied the pond's water by overfeeding its wildlife inhabitants. Feeding the ducks and goldfish bread, a common occurrence at the Duck Pond, led to more than four feet of sludge accumulating on the pond's bottom, endangering the animal's lives and making the water unsightly, said Gary Smith, associate director of UNM's Environmental Services Department.

Protests mark one-year anniversary in Iraq

About 500 protesters representing 40 local groups gathered at Robinson Park to mark the one-year anniversary of the war in Iraq on Saturday morning. With signs stating "End U.S. Occupation in Iraq" and "Another Patriot for Peace" the crowd walked up Central Avenue, through Old Town and stood in front of the Red Stone missile at the National Atomic Museum.

UNM-West keeps growing

In an effort to help it come through on its commitment of offering higher education to all New Mexicans, UNM is taking an increasing interest in expanding the services on its West Side campus. Started from a small program within Rio Rancho Elementary School in 1990, UNM-West has seen an explosion of popularity with the nontraditional, part-time students who are increasingly making up student bodies nationwide, said Jeronimo Dominguez, vice provost of the Extended University.

Male pill may soon be reality

With more than 100 million women worldwide taking an oral contraceptive daily, many are eager for the pill to be available for men. The ANZAC Research Institute in Sydney, Australia is one of many pharmaceutical companies that are confident, thanks to recent developments in their research, that male contraception will be available soon.

Staff Report UNM's ski team has gone down in history as the first Lobo team to win an NCAA title in the school's history. Solid performances from the Alpine and the Nordic teams helped secure the title for UNM at the 2004 NCAA Skiing Championships held in Truckee, Calif.

Last-minute senator approved by ASUNM

David Steele is coming through in a pinch for ASUNM. Former Sen. Natalie Montgomery resigned and Vice President Amanda Sims had to fill the position within two weeks. The Senate unanimously approved Steele, an electrical engineering major, Wednesday, exactly two weeks after Montgomery left.

It's just nature. But some nude art models say it's not easy work being natural. "You have to be in shape. It takes an endurance and stamina," said Renee Woods, TVI and former UNM model. "It's not that it's hard. It's just not easy. You can't just be a lump on the log.

Classes raise support for abortion

Staff Report UNM medical students are going through special classes to educate them on the ins and outs of abortion and some of them are leaving more supportive of the procedure, according to a University study. A study released last week designed to gauge students' openness to abortion instruction in medical school found that about 30 percent of the time, people's opinions of abortion change as a result.

DENVER, Colo. - The top-seeded Lobos put the No. 8 seed Air Force Falcons out of their misery Wednesday afternoon in a 63-50 blow out at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo. The Falcons ended the season with no conference victories. UNM didn't start out looking so hot itself.

2% raise angers faculty, staff

The 2 percent increase in faculty and staff salaries Gov. Richardson signed off on Tuesday isn't enough for UNM to remain competitive in retaining top professors or to raise lagging morale among employees, University community members say. UNM's Board of Regents and President Caldera pushed for a 5 percent increase, even challenging the state's Legislature to find funding for a 10 percent raise.

Study: UNM professors mostly Democrats

UNM's College Republicans say there is a biased political atmosphere and climate on campus. The group released the results of a four-month study Wednesday that found 83 percent of registered professors at UNM are Democrats, 11 percent are Republicans and 6 percent are classified as other.

Local salon offers several faster tanning alternatives

Students looking for a summer tan can get it faster than they think. The Matrix tanning bed, already being used in the European market, was brought to Albuquerque two years ago by Scott Bushey, owner of Solarium. Its design provides 360-degree coverage, eliminating the need to twist and turn in tanning beds, nearly cutting tanning time in half, he said.

One group at UNM prefers to unicycle and juggle its way to happiness. "To play," was all William Matthews, assistant director of the Juggling and Unicycling Club, had to say when he described the ragtag group that has been in existence for two years at the University.

Vandals evidently opposed to radical Conservative Ann Coulter have left their mark on the UNM campus. On the doors of Popejoy Hall, posters for her planned appearance tonight have the words "You too can join the master race" and "You too can think like a war criminal" scribbled across them.

Lawsuits decrease music

Staff Report The Recording Industry Association of America's vigilance in policing the nation's illegal downloading of music online has apparently persuaded many people to stop the behavior. According to the American Life Project, a national organization studying the impact of the Internet on society, concluded in a study released last week that the number of people downloading online music has decreased more than 50 percent since the RIAA began unleashing barrages of lawsuits against music downloaders in July 2003.
