Forums held for museum director hunt

The search for a new UNM Art Museum director has been narrowed down to four. "We have four very highly qualified candidates," said David Stuart, associate provost of academic affairs and hiring officer for the position. "Each has something different to offer.

Historic districts may lose protection

Another effort to revitalize Downtown Albuquerque is in motion. The Downtown Core, which is bound by I-25 to the Rio Grande River and I-40 to Avenida Cesar Chavez, is home to three neighborhoods designated as historic districts by the City of Albuquerque - Old Town, Huning Highland and the 4th Ward.

N.M. gas prices hit record highs

Gas prices are at record highs this week, but there are things UNM students can do to save money on fuel. According to an AAA New Mexico news release, the state's record for gas prices was set Friday at $1.684 per gallon. The national average is $1.755 per gallon.

Red or green - it's a choice for chile, but also represented women's choice for reproductive freedom Tuesday. Lighting on campus to undergo makeover

"The brighter the light, the darker the shadow. You can have it so bright on the paving that you can't see anything off the paving, in the bushes and that sort of thing.

Campus escorts help nighttime pedestrians

It may be getting dark a little later, but students walking around campus after nightfall don't have to walk alone. The University Escort Services will accompany students, staff and faculty members from any place on campus to anywhere within a one-mile radius of the UNM campus 24 hours a day, said Lt.

Group helps shed light on kidnappings

Justicia sin Fronteras is proof that students' interests can transform a class. Last fall after watching "Se§orita Extraviada," a story about the more than 200 young women who were kidnapped, raped and murdered in Ju†rez, Mexico, members of the Spanish 439 class at UNM decided to get involved.

Marathon honors death march

Running a marathon's distance is something to celebrate. In tribute to war heroes, five members of UNM's Navy ROTC participated in the 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March and took first place in the military light division on March 21. Members had to run the marathon wearing camouflage, military boots and a 10-pound backpack.

Chicano heritage celebrated

A national Chicana/Chicano association made a stop in Albuquerque 14 years ago and broke its attendance record - it came back to try and duplicate that over the weekend. The event held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown brought those interested in Chicana and Chicano research together to mix activism and academic learning.

Staff Report University administrators are making some changes. Judy Jones, UNM vice president for institutional advancement, has held her position since 1998 and has been employed at UNM for 16 years. She will take another position at UNM as the associate vice president for strategic initiatives at the Health Sciences Center on April 12.

Ughh...the dreaded group project. UNM students are frequently asked by professors to participate in collaborative projects designed to be educational, but many students say they are more of a burden than anything. "I hate them," said UNM business student Aaron Orosco.

NM students flock to UNM with science on the brain

Thousands of middle and high school students from around New Mexico will swarm the UNM campus tomorrow at the New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Inc. Jamboree. The jamboree is an academic competition where 2,000 students from more than 30 school districts vie for trophies and bragging rights in categories designed to test students' knowledge and creativity, said Brendon Gordon, western region coordinator for NM MESA.

Double-felony law stirs abortion debate

The bill has generated much controversy among pro-choice supporters, who see the Unborn Victims of Violence Act as a direct threat to abortion rights for women.

UNM budget under the lens

UNM President Louis Caldera said Thursday's budget summit went a long way toward helping administrators, students, staff and faculty understand each other's financial needs. "I'm really pleased," Caldera said. "With the great feedback we got, we will now go back to the drawing board to craft a proposal.
