UNM officials do the shuffle

Staff Report University administrators are making some changes. Judy Jones, UNM vice president for institutional advancement, has held her position since 1998 and has been employed at UNM for 16 years. She will take another position at UNM as the associate vice president for strategic initiatives at the Health Sciences Center on April 12.

Group work mimics real life

Ughh...the dreaded group project. UNM students are frequently asked by professors to participate in collaborative projects designed to be educational, but many students say they are more of a burden than anything. "I hate them," said UNM business student Aaron Orosco.

NM students flock to UNM with science on the brain

Thousands of middle and high school students from around New Mexico will swarm the UNM campus tomorrow at the New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Inc. Jamboree. The jamboree is an academic competition where 2,000 students from more than 30 school districts vie for trophies and bragging rights in categories designed to test students' knowledge and creativity, said Brendon Gordon, western region coordinator for NM MESA.

Double-felony law stirs abortion debate

by Jessica Frison Daily Lobo Congress passed a bill last month to make violent crime against pregnant women a double felony, holding assailants legally responsible for the mother and her unborn child. The bill has generated much controversy among pro-choice supporters, who see the Unborn Victims of Violence Act as a direct threat to abortion rights for women.

UNM budget under the lens

UNM President Louis Caldera said Thursday's budget summit went a long way toward helping administrators, students, staff and faculty understand each other's financial needs. "I'm really pleased," Caldera said. "With the great feedback we got, we will now go back to the drawing board to craft a proposal.

Groups tout STI awareness

Sexually transmitted infections are prevalent in college communities and Peer Educators want to raise UNM's awareness. Booths will be set up today by local groups and national organizations west of Zimmerman Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "April is STI Awareness Month, so we thought the beginning of April would be a good time to have an awareness day," said Lindsey Bolton, event coordinator.

ASUNM distributes spring funds

In a unanimous vote, ASUNM senators passed their spring 2004 budget Wednesday - allocating about two-thirds of the available funds to ASUNM executive agencies. The Associated Students of UNM spread $499,418 across 122 groups, with ASUNM executive agencies receiving $344,687 of those funds.

UNM warns against identity theft

Nicole Miller said she is protective of her personal items because she knows how easily identity theft can happen. About 9.9 million identity-theft cases were reported last year, affecting 4.6 percent of the population, according to the Federal Trade Commissions' Identity Theft Survey Report.

Vandals target campus buildings

UNM police were greeted early Wednesday morning by broken windows and trash cans that were lit on fire. Vandalism was reported to UNMPD from Scholes Hall, Castetter Hall, the Biology Annex, UNM Continuing Education and the Hibben Center. UNMPD was dispatched to Castetter Hall at about 5:30 in reference to seven broken windows in the building's greenhouse and lobby.

Tuition increase open for debate

A tuition increase for UNM students is inevitable. A budget summit, which has never been done at UNM, will allow the University community to engage in dialogue about issues concerning UNM finances. "We are going to have to make some choices, and we might have to make some sacrifices," UNM President Louis Caldera said.

Two teens break free from local detention center (AP) - Two teens, including one charged with murder, have escaped from an Albuquerque youth detention facility that is scheduled to close this year. Joseph Archuleta, 18, who is charged with murdering a Moriarty teen last August, and Alan Green, 19, arrested for probation violations, made it out of the Camino Nuevo detention center Monday night.

Free from fear

Former death row inmate Juan Melendez Jr. said Tuesday that he was not saved by the system, but something else altogether. "The system wanted to kill me," he said. "I was saved by the grace of God." Melendez, who spoke during a senior seminar course in Mitchell Hall, said a man living under the constant threat of death who does not grab something spiritual will either go crazy or kill himself.

BUS program offers wide range of study

by Krista Pino Daily Lobo A Pulitzer Prize winner, a movie director and the governor of Zuni Pueblo are among the thousands of UNM alumni who graduated with a degree from the Bachelor of University Studies program. According to the BUS advisement guide, the program attracts students who feel restricted by traditional programs and offers students the opportunity to combine two or more academic disciplines.

Student granted $26,000

Staff Report UNM junior Sean Murray is one of nearly 80 students in the nation selected as a 2004 Truman Scholar. According to a University news release, Murray is the sixth UNM student to receive the scholarship. The award is a $26,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduates who want financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government or nonprofit organizations.

Until death do us part

After a year and a half, they considered themselves a married couple - 16 years later, it may be legal. Ann Nihlen, chairwoman of UNM's Department of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies, and her spouse, Lisa Wisdom, were one of the 26 same-sex couples who had their marriage licenses recorded in Bernalillo County on Feb.

Each year at UNM, living composers of new music get their time in the spotlight. The 33rd annual John Donald Robb Composers Symposium is an assembly of nationally and internationally renowned composers who are invited to UNM to share three days of composition seminars, panel discussions, demonstrations and concerts with UNM music students and anyone else interested in music's avant garde.

Second chance for Spring Storm

Staff Report Good news for those who haven't had time to volunteer for some community service: ASUNM's Spring Storm deadline has been extended to this Friday. According to Saraswati Khalsa, assistant director of Community Experience, an ASUNM executive agency, the deadline has been extended because many student groups have called expressing interest in participating, but have not gotten to turn in their sign-up forms.
