Graduate accused in Bosque blaze

by Manuelita Beck and Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo A UNM alumnus is one of three men charged in last week's Rio Grande Bosque fire. Ben Tucker was arrested Friday and charged with negligent arson in connection to the fire. Tucker was arrested along with Peter Gallo and Jan Yoder.

Regents pass yearly budget unanimously

The UNM Board of Regents passed a $1.48 billion budget Wednesday for the 2004-05 academic year. UNM President Louis Caldera said the budget, an $85 million increase from last year, is a reflection of priorities. He lauded the student body for accepting the 12.

Protesters promote medical marijuana legalization

Medical marijuana supporters gathered Friday in front of Rep. Heather Wilson's Downtown office to protest her anti-legalization stance. Last July, Wilson voted against an amendment that would prevent the federal government from interfering with state medical marijuana laws.

Gay unions celebrated on campus

by Manuelita Beck Daily Lobo It was pretty easy for guests to catch a bouquet at the wedding reception held for the 64 same-sex couples married in Sandoval County. The Coalition for Equality in New Mexico used the event in the SUB ballroom as an opening for its Protect Our Families campaign, a series of events designed to promote same-sex marriage rights in New Mexico.

New students educated in diversity

by Krista Pino Daily Lobo UNM's new student orientation program attempts to teach students how to break through the wall of prejudice. During Lobo Orientation, Bird Podzemny educated newcomers on the importance of embracing diversity. At this summer's first session, Podzemny began her speech with an interactive game with the audience.

Students experience first taste of UNM

by Rachel Stohr Daily Lobo Incoming freshman Michael Chavez had a smile on his face as he left the first session of Lobo Orientation. Chavez was one of more than 200 freshmen and transfer students to complete the first of 12 mandatory orientation sessions this summer at UNM.

KUNM begins remodeling process

by Krista Pino Daily Lobo In six months, KUNM will undergo a renovation to turn O§ate Hall into a state-of-the-art radio station. The renovation on the third floor of O§ate Hall has been in the planning stages for the last two years. It will provide office suites and more capacity for radio programs, news studios and a bigger news department.

Foreign students attracted to UNM

The number of international students attending UNM is on the rise. Since Sept. 11, 2001, universities across the country have reported declining numbers of international applicants. But a report released by the Office of International Programs and Studies at UNM showed an attendance increase of 8.

Bars crack down on fake IDs

Students with fake identification cards may find Downtown bars aren't so lenient. "Don't even try to come here with a fake ID," said Robert Pallares, general manager of Sauce and the Liquid Lounge. "We're pretty strict over here." Pallares said there are two steps to check IDs.

Weathering a movement

At the height of the Vietnam War, Mark Rudd acquired fame as a militant anti-war activist. Today the TVI math teacher says peaceful nonviolence is the most effective political means. As national secretary of Students for a Democratic Society, the largest student-based anti-Vietnam War movement in the United States, Rudd helped lead the 1968 student seizure of Columbia University.

Regents approve tuition increase

Parking permit prices rise by 10%

As printed April 26, 2004 by Felicia Fonseca Daily Lobo Tuition is up, enrollment is up and now parking permits prices have gone up. Online parking permits went on sale April 26, and included is a 10 percent price increase per year. Students can expect to pay anywhere from $6 to $11 more than last year, and faculty and staff will see increases between $6 and $42.

SOLAS names new leadership

In a victory over opponent Joseph Garcia, Sandra Ortsman was elected SOLAS president. Ortsman, a second-year master's student in the Latin American studies and the community and regional planning program, begins her term this fall. A third of LAS students cast their vote last week in the election.

UNM Hospital to negotiate wages

Union members fear this week's wage negotiations at UNM Hospital won't be as collaborative as they would like. Margaret Trace, a member of the 1199 NUHH, said negotiations have been more confrontational than collaborative since 2000. The National Union of Hospital and Healthcare employees represents the hospital's nursing staff and some technical employees.

Fate of Family Housing

Residents of the Student Family Housing complex met with department heads Thursday to discuss rumors that the complex will be shut down. Robert Schulte, director of business services for UNM Housing and Food Services, began the meeting by saying he wanted to clarify things addressed at an April 15 meeting regarding the future of SFH.
