Ministry finds new Greek home

It is something students do not expect to see on Greek row, but Zachary Kerns is hopeful his new campus ministry will flourish despite what goes on across the street. Kerns, a pastor at the Sandia Church of the Nazarene, is opening a Christian Living community in the Sigma Chi house.

Airline flight forced to make emergency landing (AP) - An American Airlines flight en route to Dallas returned to Albuquerque on Wednesday because of a problem with an engine. War in Iraq hits close to home for some students

The beginning of the war in Iraq last March gave UNM's campus a politically charged atmosphere. Sidewalks and bulletin boards were covered with war messages, and protests near the bookstore were a frequent occurrence. Now, more than a year later, many UNM community members have friends, family, husbands and wives still fighting in Iraq.

Bugman won't use pesticides on campus

It's easy for UNM's Bugman to say when he gets the most complaints about bugs on campus - it's right now. At the end of the spring semester, the bugs on campus start getting active, he said. They stay active through the summer, but with less people around, he said there's less concern.

Clubs pay for tents at Fiestas this year

Student organizations will have to pay for and set up tents themselves this year at Fiestas. In past years, Student Special Events provided tents for student organizations, but this year organizers decided to use those funds for more entertainment for the annual Fiestas, which will be held at Johnson Field on Saturday.

New editor at the helm

Marisa Demarco said she got bit by the journalism bug a couple of years ago, but people from The Opposition would say she got bitten long ago. Demarco was named 2004-2005 Daily Lobo editor in chief on April 16. She started The Opposition, an underground newspaper, 11 years ago in the seventh grade.

Education job fair gaining participants

At UNM's Educator's Job Fair, students often walk away with a new job. UNM Career Services in conjunction with the College of Education will host its annual job fair in the SUB Ballroom on Thursday. The event is an opportunity for students to seek out prospective employers from across the country.

Work study aid exhausted

Students looking to extend their work study funds beyond what they were initially awarded this semester are out of luck. Kathleen O'Keefe, director of student financial aid, said all of the work study money has been awarded for the semester. Undergraduate students can receive up to $4,000 a year in work study money.

Weaving together humor and sarcasm, right-wing author Ann Coulter spoke to a packed Popejoy audience Tuesday night. Panel focuses on Hispanic issues

Francisco Apodaca says people in Northern New Mexico have been protecting their way of life long before anyone realized it. "We have been conservationists and quasi-environmentalists for many years," Apodaca said. "If we wouldn't have protected our way of life and conserved what we have, we would have been gone long ago.

Images stir campus controversy

Students passing by Zimmerman Library on Monday were greeted with a graphic 18-foot poster of an aborted fetus as part of a pro-life display sponsored by Justice for All. Alexandra von Ausdall, president of UNM's chapter of Justice for All, said the display was huge because the issue is huge.

Microscopic tool yields unique view

UNM is the only university in the United States that owns the Hitachi S-5200 - the highest resolution scanning electron microscope available today. The $800,000 microscope was dedicated today in the Ferris Engineering Building. According to Hitachi's Web site, the microscope can see detail in an object as small as half a nanometer.

Jackson a no-show at Gathering of Nations

American-Indian performer Litefoot said he is disappointed rapper Andre 3000 and the Rev. Jesse Jackson did not attend this year's Gathering of Nations powwow at The Pit. Litefoot, a rapper and Hollywood actor, said Jackson agreed to make a guest appearance at the gathering.

Parking permit prices rise

Tuition is up, enrollment is up and now parking permits prices have gone up. Online parking permits go on sale today, and included is a 10 percent price increase. Students can expect to pay anywhere from $6 to $11 more than last year, and faculty and staff will see increases between $6 and $42.

Students give cigs a kick in the backside

UNM students publicized the dangers of smoking Friday with the first Kick Butts Day. UNM's Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention worked with the newly formed student organization, Expose, to plan the day's events. The goal of Expose is to let college students know that tobacco companies are targeting them, and to advise students not to fall prey to those messages, said Sarah Chaara, a UNM student who started the organization.

Food portions, obesity on the rise in America

According to a study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is on the verge of surpassing smoking as the nation's No. 1 preventable killer. Obesity as a result of a poor diet or a lack of physical activity was responsible for 400,000 deaths last year in the United States.
