Programs honor graduates

With University commencement ceremonies rapidly approaching, many UNM students are looking forward to additional programs planned to commemorate the end of their college days. El Centro de la Raza is planning its own graduation for students, said Rosa Cervantes, student programs specialist for the program.

Wireless networks installed on parts of campus

UNM computer users are becoming unplugged. Students using laptops at Zimmerman Library, the CIRT building and the SUB can immediately be connected to the Internet through a wireless technology system. The increasing popularity of wireless technology has created a demand for the networks at UNM, said Aaron Baca, technical support analyst at Computer and Information Resources and Technology.

Buyback program not designed for every book

Cinco de Mayo stands as symbol of courage

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is not Mexico's Independence Day - that falls on Sept. 16. Rather, the holiday commemorates the Mexican victory over Napoleon and the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The French army invaded Mexico to claim territory for France and to collect debts from previous wars.

UNM faculty petition Boeglin to end graphic public displays

What started as a right-to-choose tabling event Monday in Zimmerman Plaza turned into an impromptu petition to keep a graphic Justice for All display opposing abortion off campus next semester. Justice for All put up large images of aborted fetuses last Monday and Tuesday, something Women Studies director Gail Houston said may cross the line of free speech.

Stumping for a good education

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., visited Albuquerque on Tuesday to call to attention to what he called the shortchanging of education reforms. Kerry highlighted his education plan to about 100 supporters at Longfellow Elementary School.

'Cinco' activities aim to educate

Students will have the opportunity to learn about Mexican history and customs today as Cinco de Mayo is celebrated at the Duck Pond. "It is going to be an awesome event," said James Aranda, graduate assistant to El Centro de la Raza, one of the groups sponsoring the festivities.

Former NMSU program director sues school LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The former director of black programs at New Mexico State University has sued the school, alleging discrimination, wrongful termination and emotional distress. Michael Davis, who had headed the program for seven years, alleged in his lawsuit filed in March that former NMSU President Jay Gogue, interim President William Flores and Dean of Students Gladys DeNecochea disregarded his rights.

Classes use texts written by professors

There are more than 25 textbooks sold at the UNM Bookstore written by professors for classes they teach. "It's common nationally," said Raqui Martinez, director of the Faculty Contracts and Services Office. She said there is no policy included in faculty contracts regarding requiring a book the professor wrote for a class.

Paying for college easy with research

Knight Ridder Tribune DALLAS - Molly Herod, a senior at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas, is entering college in the fall, but she already has an advanced degree in fiscal responsibility. "They give me $50 a week, that's it," said the soon-to-be Southern Methodist University freshman.

May 31 will be the end of a 30-year journey for Recreational Services director Fred Perez. "I don't want to wear out my welcome," Perez said. "I always want to be vibrant, to finish like a runner running through the tape. Thirty years is plenty. It's time to do something else.

Amy Goodman promotes new book

Amy Goodman says dissent is what makes the United States strong. Goodman, host of "Democracy Now!," made a stop at the Albuquerque Academy with her brother and co-author David Goodman on Saturday as part of their 71-city tour promoting their new book, The Exceptions to the Rulers.

Set, jump and spike for charitable even

This year, planners of the annual Get Fit event decided to have participants spike the ball to raise money. The Physical Therapy Student Association chose to organize a co-ed volleyball tournament this year for Get Fit instead of the annual bike ride it usually sponsors.

Study: cheating, plagiarism increase on campuses

Dean of Students Randy Boeglin said he does not know how many UNM students plagiarize or cheat on final examinations. Boeglin said faculty members are not required to notify his office when students are caught cheating, but said he suspects there are at least double the number of cases than are documented.

Business school gets a new dean

A native New Mexican will be returning home. Charles Crespy, dean of the College of Business at the University of Texas-El Paso, has been appointed dean of the Anderson Schools of Management. Crespy said as a native of the state, he is delighted to return to UNM after having earned four degrees at the University.

UNM College Republicans helped launch President Bush's re-election campaign Thursday at the "Party 4 the President." Vice President Dick Cheney made a conference call to the event and to more than 5,000 simultaneous national events. He urged his supporters to stand behind President Bush and register as many voters as possible by Nov.

Schedule conflicts cause concern

by Bess Given Daily Lobo Scheduling classes is not a simple issue. Mary Bibeau, academic adviser in the Communication & Journalism Department, said it is actually very complex. "Scheduling has to deal with a variety of issues that are happening around the campus," Bibeau said.

UNM professor honored for linguistics research

Linguistics professor Joan Bybee has been chosen as the 49th annual Research Lecturer, the highest honor for UNM faculty. Bybee will present her research lecture, "Say it again: How usage shapes language," at 7 p.m. tonight at the Continuing Education Building Auditorium.
