Transferring class credits to UNM not easy for some

For business student Connie Lee, transferring to UNM was a learning process in itself. Lee said she dealt with the long, difficult process of getting classes to count for credit toward her degree when she transferred to UNM in fall 2003. She said living in California where she attended California State University at Fullerton was becoming expensive, so she made the move to New Mexico.

Scholarship requirements may change

Proposed changes to the lottery scholarship program are not on paper yet - the governor's Task Force on Higher Education is keeping them all in a discussion phase. Two working groups made first reports on Friday to chairman Toney Anaya about changes that would affect New Mexico's Lottery Scholarship program.

Fire restrictions put a damper on camping fun

by Krista Pino Daily Lobo This week's rain dampened the ground, but there will still be no singing, making s'mores and ghost story telling around the campfire. Don Williams, director of New Mexico state parks, said the monsoon season will bring some relief to the state, but hasn't changed the status of fire restrictions in most parks.

UNM's Linux system cracked

CIRT security administrator Jeff Gassaway said Wednesday that an unknown and unauthorized party outside of UNM accessed a list of the University's Linux NetIDs and encrypted passwords. He said as many as 500 to 1,500 students use Linux, a flexible computer operating system, and urged all students to change their passwords.

Web dissertation goes global

It was a long night for Casey Malarcher. Malarcher, a graduate student and Ph.D. candidate, began defending his doctoral dissertation last Thursday at 2 a.m. from Seoul, South Korea. Malarcher said this is the first UNM Web conference that has reached three continents, and the first where the candidate has been outside the United States.

Study: adult reading declines

If you are reading this article, you are probably not among the growing percentage of college-aged Americans who are reading less. According to a survey released by the National Endowment for the Arts in July, only 57 percent of Americans read a book in 2002.

Businesses breathe easy as final phase of ban is enacted

The city ordinance that banned smoking in Albuquerque's restaurants a year ago entered its second and final phase Friday, expanding the prohibition to bars within restaurants. The second phase of the Albuquerque Clean Indoor Air Ordinance took effect July 3 and prohibits smoking in restaurant bars unless they are separately enclosed and ventilated to prevent the spread of second-hand smoke into dining areas.

Folk healers share wisdom

Eliseo Torres ends each shower by rubbing rosemary onto his skin. The plant, which grows in New Mexico, can also be used to cook and to treat minor illnesses. It is something his mother used for earaches, and is an herb curanderos, or folk healers, use in their practice.

Chicano studies to finalize director

UNM researchers publish water theory

Washing dishes in the kitchen sink has a theory behind it, but no one explained it until now. Professors Vakhtang Putkaradze and Peter Vorobieff and graduate student Keith Mertens describe the theory and experiment on hydrodynamic instability in a research paper published in Nature, a respected peer-reviewed science magazine.

Students hit scholarship jackpot

The New Mexico Lottery Success Scholarship will likely receive record-breaking funds in the coming years, expanding access to students. On July 1, the New Mexico Lottery Authority announced a record $148 million in profits for the fiscal year ending June 30 - $11 million more than last year.

Students advocate Fair Trade at UNM eateries

The UNM group that persuaded campus food-service officials to offer Fair Trade coffee will expand its campaign in the fall semester. Established in fall 2002, Fair Trade Initiative has pressed UNM officials to stop selling conventional coffee on campus in favor of Fair Trade coffee.

UNM neighborhoods cope with parking difficulties

Jonathan Broyles has lived on Cornell Drive for three months. He said he parks in his driveway, but if he had to park on the street it would be difficult. Many residential streets around UNM are permit parking only because residents often find their driveways blocked and no place to park on the street.

Native American studies degree nears approval

After more than 30 years of planning, a bachelor's degree in Native American studies may be a possibility for UNM students. "People have been working on this since the first part of the '70s," said John Gates, director of Native American studies. "It has been in the works for a while.

Hospital rolls out contract with IHS

by Manuelita Beck Daily Lobo Bids are due back today for the construction of UNMH Children's Hospital and Critical Care Pavilion. According to Sam Giammo, the UNM Health Sciences Center director of public affairs, the hospital will choose a bid in mid-July.

Kerry appearance at UNM canceled

Senator John Kerry canceled his Tuesday visit to UNM to vote in favor of a bill amendment in the U.S. Senate. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee was scheduled to speak to a capacity crowd in UNM's Continuing Education Auditorium Tuesday morning.

Suspect confesses to Bosque fire

An arson suspect in Wednesday's Bosque fire is facing felony charges. A Bosque fire was reported at 4:36 p.m. Wednesday. It was the closest a Bosque fire has been to UNM this year. Officials said it was a man-made fire, which burned about 17 acres in the Bosque.

Chairman stands on strong record

Joe Cecchi, dean of the School of Engineering, said the new chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department was chosen for his exciting vision. After a search began last fall, Juan Heinrich was chosen from five finalists as the new chairman of the department in early June.
