Parking rules strictly enforced

by Krista Pino Daily Lobo UNM's Parking and Transportation Services Department issues fines that range from $15 to $100 for parking violations, and if the situation requires a boot or tow, there are additional charges. Fifteen-dollar fines are issued for simple mistakes like permit display and overtime parking at a meter, said Josh Kavanagh, associate director at the department.

Daily Lobo earns No. 2 popular paper ranking

The Princeton Review ranked the Daily Lobo as the No. 2 "Great College Newspaper" in the country last week, putting the Lobo ahead of papers at Yale (No. 6), Duke (No. 13) and Harvard (No. 18). Howard University in Washington, D.C., holds the top spot. "I think it shows students appreciate the hard work of the Lobo staff in developing the paper, and therefore that they use the paper for information," said Bob Gassaway, chair of UNM's Student Publications Board.

Caldera unites UNM branches

President Louis Caldera will travel across the state this semester to strengthen the relationship between UNM and its branch campuses. "He wants to solidify the communication," said Karen Wentworth, UNM communications specialist. "He wants them to feel closer to the main campus, because those students frequently end up at main campus to get their degrees.

Faculty senate to modify curriculum

With 25,634 students enrolled at UNM, Provost Brian Foster said faculty will feel stretched this semester. Faculty Senate covered a long agenda, hearing reports from Foster and President Louis Caldera at a meeting Tuesday. Foster told members there were several initiatives the administration was looking into, including attracting more high-achieving students and trying to connect the University Honors program with disciplinary programs.

'Modern Art' delivers wonder to Cornell Mall

Fifty-eight years after beginning her college career at UNM, Betty Sabo, 75, returned on Monday. The dedication of her sculpture, "Modern Art," on the Cornell Mall marked the end of a contract she signed with the University four years ago. Seven statues of passers-by stand frozen in thought around a stainless-steel centerpiece described by one onlooker as a "fractured Coke can.

Freshmen primed for success

About 3,100 freshmen merged into the University community this year - the largest freshman class yet, President Louis Caldera said Monday. The Daily Lobo singled out three who talked about their first day on campus. Jacob Smelcer said he does not fear anything this semester - at least nothing he would say at first.

Riding with cops not quite reality television thrill

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo After growing up on re-runs of "Cops," I had some pre-conceived notions about what police officers deal with. The idea of riding along with a UNM police officer initially made me a little nervous. The waiver I had to sign to accept full responsibility if I was hurt or killed didn't help the jitters.

UNM builds enclosed fence for Caldera's house

It might not look like anything is different at the University House, but a new $100,000 addition went up over the summer. The adobe wall that encloses President Louis Caldera's backyard matches the color and texture of the house. Roger Lujan, director of facility planning, the department that oversaw the construction of the fence, said the scope of work was to create a protected outdoor area for the president and his family.

Asbestos cleared from Zimmerman

Zimmerman Library turned its ventilation fans back on Wednesday when the west wing of the library was given a clean bill of health after its asbestos-removal project was completed. Dirt in the supply ducts hit smoke detectors when the fans went on, triggering the fire alarm.

Scholarship delays cause confusion

Roughly 1,000 students who applied for general scholarships at UNM have not been notified of the status of their award. The deadline for general scholarship applications was May 15, and awards were supposed to have been given out by the first week in August.

Freshmen welcomed at Family Day

Freshmen got their first Lobo T-shirt Sunday at the Freshman Convocation Ceremony. Senior Frank Hemingway showed off five of his T-shirts during his speech urging students to get involved at UNM. Instructors wearing robes and graduation caps led the freshmen in a procession in Popejoy Hall, mimicking a graduation ceremony.

Elizabeth Edwards rallies in N.M.

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Women swing voters from New Mexico had a chance to sit down and ask vice presidential nominee John Edwards' wife Elizabeth questions Friday at a private residence in Albuquerque. Gov. Bill Richardson introduced Edwards to the 27 invited women.

Long lines expected for financial aid

By 7:30 this morning, 400 students are estimated to be in line for more than 1,800 financial aid refund checks. If students have extra money in their account after financial aid pays their tuition, fees, books and room and board, they get a check. "You can come in pick up your check and walk out," said Leo Moya, head bursar.

Welcome Back Days ease first-week jitters

Events around campus this week are designed to make the first days of school a little bit more fun than usual, Student Activities Adviser Ryan Lindquist said. "No matter if students are coming back to UNM or joining UNM for the first time, we want to make sure they have a great experience for the first week," Lindquist said.

Two positions added to Caldera's staff

President Louis Caldera created two positions to fill his communication needs. On July 23, positions for a speechwriter and a correspondent for the president's office were listed on UNM's Web site. Susan Carkeek, vice president of human resources, said due to the high volume of correspondence and speeches, both positions became necessary.

Libertarian fights for college vote

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik, who wrapped up a two-week media tour in New Mexico on Saturday, said the election this November could be a life-or-death decision for college-age voters. Badnarik said the Libertarian Party contests any military draft that includes college students, and compared it to slavery.

Dems object to Nader petition gatherers

by Manuelita Beck Daily Lobo Democrats criticized a recent petition drive at UNM for independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader. His campaign hired JSM, Inc., a Florida-based marketing firm, to collect signatures to get him on the ballot in New Mexico.

Correction

In the caption for the photo that ran with "Lobo customs alive and well," the Daily Lobo incorrectly identified the competing fraternities. The chariot races, which took place until fall 2000, were between Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon during the halftime of the homecoming game.

Regents reject board nominees
