Crime Watch

Feb. 22 A UNM police officer was dispatched to the La Posada parking lot because of a fight between two men, according to a police report. One man told the officer the other struck him in the face. The other man told the officer he threw the punch in self-defense.

Speaker debunks racial stereotypes

In 2003, Darius Lee Smith created a curriculum to dismantle the myths of American Indians as sports mascots, cartoon figures and dead fables. His curriculum has changed the way American-Indian history is taught in Denver Public Schools, he said. Smith, the director of Indian Education for Denver Public Schools, presented an hour-long lecture on Monday, discussing what he called diversity redefined from an indigenous people's perspective.

UNM gets $3M for science HQ

Sevilleta's field station used to consist of two trailers and an army of tents where researchers could camp out. "I bought those two trailer houses so we had somewhere for the students to clean, wash and cook food," said Jim Gosz, a professor in the Biology Department.

Student section may have a price

A student section at The Pit could cost UNM students $200 each in student fees. ASUNM wants to bring a student-only section back to The Pit. Senators are looking into increasing student fees to do so. "We really don't want to do that," student Sen. Erin Muffoletto said.

Greeks stage fund-raiser

Sororities and fraternities put on a show Friday night to raise money for charity. "It's so much fun, and all of the money raised goes to charity," said freshman Mahealani Luafalemana who attended Greek Sing at the SUB. Members from fraternities and sororities participated in the show to raise money for All Faiths Receiving Home, a multiservice, nonprofit agency that serves abused and neglected children and their families in New Mexico.

Legislature Summary

Higher education Legislation that would require standardized course names and numbering systems for lower-level courses at public universities passed in the Senate on Wednesday. Under the measure, a commission would establish a statewide plan to regulate the names of lower-level courses to help students transfer credits.

Building evacuated for fire

A coffee maker that caught on fire caused firefighters to evacuate the Mechanical Engineering building and reroute traffic for an hour Friday. Redondo Drive was blocked off from Logan Hall to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue for an hour, causing South Lot shuttles and Albuquerque city buses to find another route.

Faculty club opens after 3-year wait

Gov. Bill Richardson, author Tony Hillerman and artist Georgia O'Keefe have one thing in common. They all have honorary degrees from the UNM "They're awarded to individuals who have had a lifetime of extraordinary accomplishments," said Claudia Isaac, associate professor of Community and Regional Planning.

Edward Abington, who spent almost 30 years in the Foreign Service, spoke about issues of peace between Israelis and Palestinians, as well as what the Bush administration faces in the Middle East to a crowd of about 15.

Mayor to restrict all-ages shows

Deborah James, spokeswoman for the mayor's office, said Downtown is typically safe. But a rise in violent activity at all-ages events is the reason behind Mayor Martin Chavez's initiative to keep underage events and over-21 events separate. The mayor and the Downtown Action Team announced this initiative at a press conference Feb.

Colleges becoming more competitive, study says MINNEAPOLIS (U-Wire) - Colleges are becoming more like businesses, according to a report released last week by a higher-education research group at Brown University. The group, The Futures Project, did a five-year study on how higher education is becoming more competitive and market-oriented, said Lara Couturier, the project's interim principal investigator.

Alcohol, weight gain linked

A White Russian has 400 calories. That might not be a concern on a Friday or Saturday night of fun, but a study published Feb. 15 that showed an association between drinking and being overweight might make a person think twice before ordering one. Rosalind Breslow, co-author of the study, said alcohol has seven calories per gram.

Program offers loan repayment

Gov. gives Lobos the nod

Gov. Bill Richardson declared Tuesday Lobos Appreciation Day. After Monday's win against Utah, Richardson wanted to acknowledge the basketball team for the good season it has had, said Gilbert Gallegos, spokesman for Richardson's office. "The governor is a huge fan," Gallegos said.

Crime watch

Feb. 15 A man filed a report with UNM police claiming a fellow fraternity member physically assaulted him. The man told police he was attending a fraternity-sponsored event on Sept. 19, 2004. When he returned home at 2 a.m., another member of the fraternity punched him in the face, according to the report.

Vaccine poised to hit UNM

UNM students will soon be able to get a longer-lasting vaccination for meningitis. The Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine for meningitis on Jan. 14 for 11- to 55-year-olds that will last twice as long as the vaccine that is administered now. Beverly Kloeppel, director of the Student Health Center, said it will carry the new vaccine.
