Man arrested at airport in ID theft bank scam (AP) - A man with about a dozen aliases has been accused of using several people's names and Social Security numbers to open more than 40 bank accounts as part of a coast-to-coast scam, federal authorities said Monday.

Easter bunny visits Duck Pond

by Karina Guzzi Daily Lobo It took 10 minutes for kids at the Duck Pond on Saturday to find 3,500 eggs. People - most of them excited children - crowded around the Duck Pond. They held their baskets and waited for the egg hunt to begin while taking pictures with the Easter Bunny.

UNM retains travel grant

UNM student Erin Schultz went to Australia in 2003 to study bioluminescent ostracods - animals that live in the ocean and glow in the dark. "They're like bright blue flashes coming from the ocean," Schultz said. She was able to study the animals because of a program offered through the University Honors Program.

Internet service sniffs out plagiarism

by John Bear Daily Lobo Plagiarists beware. There's a new sheriff in town - its name is plagiarism.org. According to the quarterly journal Psychological Record, almost 40 percent of college undergraduates admit to plagiarizing written material. The Center for Academic Integrity reports 80 percent of students cheat at least once.

HSC's first in vitro baby born

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo The first baby conceived with the help of UNM's fertility center was born last month in Albuquerque. Chloe Love Gardner was born Feb. 24 to Katherine and Bill Gardner, who conceived their daughter using in vitro fertilization.

Record numbers apply for U. South Carolina COLUMBIA, S.C. (U-WIRE) - More than 13,000 students, an all-time high, applied this year for 3,500 spots in the University of South Carolina fall 2005 freshman class. In-state students are expected to comprise 75 percent of the class.

Board investigates betting-pool fliers

Staff Report A betting pool for March Madness advertised on campus led to the seizure of a student employee's computer, cell phone and records relating to the pool on Tuesday. The New Mexico Gaming Control Board came to campus to investigate after it received an anonymous tip from someone wondering how legal the pool was, said Greg Saunders, acting executive director of the board.

Push for student section continues

ASUNM will carry on the fight for a student-only section at The Pit even though basketball season is over for the Lobos. Chewy White, Chair of ASUNM's Pit ad hoc committee, said senators will pursue the section all year. He said the student-only section will allow students more freedom at games.

Senate OKs Pell Grant increase

by Andrew Nusca Washington Square News NEW YORK (U-WIRE) - The U.S. Senate passed a $2.57 trillion budget resolution Thursday that includes a provision to increase the maximum Pell Grant award by $450 to $4,500. The resolution, passed in a 51-49 vote, will also preserve many federal student aid programs President Bush has proposed eliminating.

HSC's top lawyer resigns

Saundra Brown-Savoy took off time from her job as head of the Health Sciences legal office to study for the New Mexico State Bar Exam in January and February. But Susan Carkeek, vice president of Human Resources, said she wasn't sure if Brown-Savoy had taken the exam, which took place on Feb.

Law would make 'roofies' a felony

by Karina Guzzi Daily Lobo Legislation passed in the New Mexico House and Senate would make it a crime to distribute or possess date rape drugs if Gov. Bill Richardson signs the bill. The bill makes it a crime to distribute common date rape drugs such as gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and flunitrazepam, or "roofies," with the intent of committing a crime without the recipient's knowledge.

Type "moon boots" into Google and the search engine will suggest trying "Napoleon Dynamite moon boots." Jon Heder left his moon boots at home Wednesday when he spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the SUB. Heder starred as an outcast named Napoleon Dynamite in the film of the same name.

President Bush assured seniors Tuesday that under his proposed reform, they will continue to receive their Social Security checks. Nearly 1,500 New Mexicans attended the invite-only morning panel discussion about Social Security changes at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

That age group is losing money by not filing taxes correctly, according to a study by Turbo Tax. The study also stated people in this age group say they are being ignored when it comes to filing taxes.

Event provides info on morning-after pill

Thirty-two students got prescriptions for emergency contraception at Smith Plaza on Tuesday. Jaclynn Castanon was one of those students. "It's cool," she said. "It's convenient." Castanon said she had been in situations where pharmacies were closed and she wasn't able get Plan B, an emergency contraception that prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex.
