Expert teaches students manners

Anybody in a business situation has 30 seconds to make a first impression, said Kristine McCarty, an etiquette consultant for the Airis Group company. Fifty-five students attended her etiquette lunch Wednesday. "You never have a second chance to make a first impression," she said.

Pizza, coffee shops to open near UNM

by Danila Crespin Daily Lobo Students will have another coffee shop and pizza place to choose from at the beginning of the summer. Satellite Coffee and Red Brick Pizza are under construction at the corner of Central Avenue and Harvard Drive. They are scheduled to open in June.

ASUNM denies ad funding

ASUNM's Finance Committee showed consistency in slashing student groups' budgets Wednesday at the appropriation meeting. But this time, it was for its own organization. The Associated Students of UNM's Outreach and Appointments Committee went before the Finance Committee asking for $10,000 for advertising.

Fair hears mayor's protest policy

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez introduced a proposed set of guidelines for peaceful protesting at UNM's first Peace Fair on Tuesday. In an interview Tuesday night, Chavez said Albuquerque's Free Expression Ordinance recognizes the differences between spontaneous and organized forms of expression.

Crime Watch

Feb. 22 A UNM police officer was dispatched to the La Posada parking lot because of a fight between two men, according to a police report. One man told the officer the other struck him in the face. The other man told the officer he threw the punch in self-defense.

Professors switching to online reserves

There are 708 courses with documents on electronic reserves this semester. Instructor Stephen Alley said going digital is a good idea. "I first started using e-reserves as a way to cut down on paper," Alley said. "If you think about just the first day of class in a room of 240 students, there would be so much paper just on the syllabus alone.

Bill would end obesity suits

by Karina Guzzi Daily Lobo The state Senate is considering legislation that would prevent people from suing a restaurant if they become overweight or unhealthy from eating there. Sen. Steve Komadina wrote the bill after hearing about a case on the news where people sued McDonald's because they became obese.

Provost to step down; search planned for fall

Brian Foster is stepping down as provost of the University. At the end of the semester he will be returning to faculty status, and Reed Dasenbrock, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will take his place as interim director for the 2005-2006 academic year.

UNM gets $3M for science HQ

Sevilleta's field station used to consist of two trailers and an army of tents where researchers could camp out. "I bought those two trailer houses so we had somewhere for the students to clean, wash and cook food," said Jim Gosz, a professor in the Biology Department.

Speaker debunks racial stereotypes

In 2003, Darius Lee Smith created a curriculum to dismantle the myths of American Indians as sports mascots, cartoon figures and dead fables. His curriculum has changed the way American-Indian history is taught in Denver Public Schools, he said. Smith, the director of Indian Education for Denver Public Schools, presented an hour-long lecture on Monday, discussing what he called diversity redefined from an indigenous people's perspective.

Legislature Summary

Higher education Legislation that would require standardized course names and numbering systems for lower-level courses at public universities passed in the Senate on Wednesday. Under the measure, a commission would establish a statewide plan to regulate the names of lower-level courses to help students transfer credits.

Building evacuated for fire

A coffee maker that caught on fire caused firefighters to evacuate the Mechanical Engineering building and reroute traffic for an hour Friday. Redondo Drive was blocked off from Logan Hall to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue for an hour, causing South Lot shuttles and Albuquerque city buses to find another route.

Student section may have a price

A student section at The Pit could cost UNM students $200 each in student fees. ASUNM wants to bring a student-only section back to The Pit. Senators are looking into increasing student fees to do so. "We really don't want to do that," student Sen. Erin Muffoletto said.

Greeks stage fund-raiser

Sororities and fraternities put on a show Friday night to raise money for charity. "It's so much fun, and all of the money raised goes to charity," said freshman Mahealani Luafalemana who attended Greek Sing at the SUB. Members from fraternities and sororities participated in the show to raise money for All Faiths Receiving Home, a multiservice, nonprofit agency that serves abused and neglected children and their families in New Mexico.

Faculty club opens after 3-year wait

by Xochitl Campos Daily Lobo Three years ago, a club for faculty members was only an idea. On Friday, it became a reality. Beverly Burris, chair of the Faculty Club Committee, was at the club Friday to welcome visiting faculty members and guide them through their facility during an open house.

'You're hired' Trump show scours UNM

by Maria DeBlassie Daily Lobo UNM graduate students and professors might have a chance to make it big on "The Apprentice" today. Brandon Nickens, casting director for "The Apprentice," will be on campus from 1 to 5 p.m. at Hodgin Hall looking to cast people for the show.
