Crime Watch Briefs

Two UNM police officers were dispatched to Zimmerman Library when a security guard reported seeing a man with drug paraphernalia in the second floor bathrooms, according to a police report. The officer asked the man for permission to search his bag and found a glass pipe with burn marks on both ends and two spoons with burn marks on the bottom, the report stated.

UNM to switch health care plans

by Caleb Fort The Daily Lobo Faculty and staff could pay more for their health insurance plans. On March 14, the Board of Regents approved two health insurance contracts that will replace all health plans available to UNM employees. The contracts, which were awarded to Lovelace Sandia Health System and United Healthcare, will result in a range of price changes from a 6 percent reduction to a 9 percent increase, said Arthur Gonzales, manager of benefits in the Human Resources department.

Voting starts in election of GPSA leader

by Rivkela Brodsky Daily Lobo There are 6,000 members of GPSA, but only one showed up to the presidential candidate debate Monday morning. Instead of having a debate, Buckner Creel, GPSA president, and Andrea Gunderson, a presidential candidate, sat in the Santa Ana room in the SUB and talked about an issue that came up in last year's election. The 2004 election was the first time online voting was used. Gunderson, who sat on the election commission committee last year, said there was concern because some graduate and professional students were not able to vote online. Debbie Morris, director of Student Activities, said some first-time online voters didn't realize until voting began that students without a Net ID could not vote.

Program rebounds after name change

Enrique Lamadrid wants Chicano studies to be the next success story in University College. He changed the name of the program, is looking to change funding from soft to hard money and is boasting a 30 percent increase in enrollment this semester. "All the wind is blowing in our direction at this point," said Lamadrid, director of the program.

Experiment causes SUB evacuation

by Karina Guzzi Daily Lobo A NASA experiment brought the math and science jamboree at the SUB to a temporary halt on Saturday. At 12:11 p.m., when participants were at the SUB for lunch, the fire alarm went off. The building had to be evacuated until firefighters arrived and checked the building for safety.

Students face tuition hike

UNM President Louis Caldera spent his birthday at the second annual Budget Summit on Friday. ASUNM President Kevin Stevenson presented Caldera with balloons and a cake, jokingly saying student fees had paid for them. "I'm glad they didn't wait till the end of the day," Caldera said.

Retired deputy chief named new head of APD (AP) - A veteran Albuquerque police officer has returned to lead the department. Mayor Martin Chavez announced Saturday that retired deputy chief Ray Schultz would replace Gilbert Gallegos as chief of the Albuquerque Police Department.

LANL management will likely go to UC

Opportunities for UNM lie in the hands of Los Alamos National Labs. University of California manages the labs, and the contract will be up for bid soon. Even though UNM will not be a part of the management team, it is in the best interest of the University for UC to get the lab, UNM President Louis Caldera said.

by Karina Guzzi Daily Lobo After two women in the administration left their jobs last year and men filled those positions, a group of female faculty members began questioning gender equity on campus. Julie Weaks-Gutierrez, the former vice president for business and finance, and Judy Jones, the former vice president for advancement, resigned in April 2004.

Schiavo protests spark debate on Florida campus TAMPA, Fla. (U-WIRE) - Terri Schiavo's feeding tube was removed 12 days ago, but the debate about her right to live continues. Members of the Christian organization Citytakers held an open forum in front of the University of South Florida's Cooper Hall on Tuesday afternoon to engage students in the debate.

Centennial Library repopens after flood

The lower level of Centennial Library opened Wednesday after $2.2 million in repairs. Joel Straquadine, facility maintenance manager, said 99 percent of the construction is done. "We wanted to open," he said. "We've got school going on. We want that building open.

Handicapped parking abused

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Clare Stott, a student who uses a wheelchair, said although the handicapped parking situation has improved in the past few years, it is still not ideal. "I think they've made a lot of improvement," Stott said. "Compared to around town, the campus is much better.

Students kicked out of meeting

Only selected pharmacy students were invited to meet with an accreditation team Wednesday at the College of Pharmacy. Mike Gallegos, a fourth-year pharmacy student, was asked to leave at the beginning of the meeting. Gallegos is suing UNM and John Pieper, the dean of the college, for breach of contract because he said he was wrongly held back in his classes.

E-mail list promotes recycling

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Only one student used the recycling bin by Casitas in the SUB between noon and 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Linda McCormick, manager of the Hazardous Waste Program, said several hundred recycling locations are on campus, but many go unseen by students.

March 21 A UNM police officer was dispatched to UNMH when a woman reported harassment from an ex-boyfriend, according to a police report. The woman told the officer that a former boyfriend was calling her cell phone and harassing her. The report stated the officer referred the woman to Domestic Relations at the Metropolitan Court House to apply for a restraining order.

Note-takers in high demand

There are 150 students who qualify for note-taking services through Accessibility Services. The department, however, only has 125 note takers to fill an estimated 500 classes. "There is a lot of demand for that service," said Gary Haug, interim director of the department.

High school finds location for first year

High Tech High at UNM Albuquerque will be off UNM's campus in the fall. A site has been found for the school at 2500 Yale SE, said Robin Troup, director of the school, although the lease has not been signed yet. "We decided the cost of being on campus was too much," she said.

Disabled find harsh terrain at UNM hall

The most inaccessible building for disabled students at UNM is Marron Hall, said Bob Meyer, an architect at The Department of Facility Planning. When Leslie Donovan worked at the Daily Lobo, two ramps were installed so she would have access to the newsroom.
