Visiting prof brings Einstein to undergrads

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Len Zane, a visiting professor at UNM, said it is a happy coincidence he is teaching in 2005, 100 years after Albert Einstein published the theory of special relativity. "It worked out real nicely to have the classes I'm teaching on the 100th anniversary of Einstein's big year," he said.

Controversial professor returns to teach honors

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo He's back. Richard Berthold, a history professor who retired from UNM after making a controversial remark about Sept. 11, 2001, during a lecture, will be teaching an honors course in the spring 2006 semester. Rosalie Otero, director of the University Honors Program, said Berthold presented the department with a class proposal in August.

Women of wartime

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Barbara Pickering said she envies women who serve in the military today. "Ninety-seven percent of us were stuck behind desks with a typewriter," said Pickering, a Vietnam veteran. "Now they are doctors and pilots." Pickering was one of four Navajo women veterans who spoke about their experience in the military Monday in Zimmerman Library.

Students' dogs fixed for free

by Marian Chavez Daily Lobo About 40 UNM students took advantage of a free spaying or neutering of their dogs on Saturday. Brenda Myer, an employee at the Eastside Animal Care Center, said some students had more than one dog they got fixed. "So we've probably done at least 50 animals," Myer said.

Group gets students to remember Sept. 11

by Aidan Turowski Daily Lobo Students passing by the Duck Pond on Friday witnessed thousands of miniature American flags decorating a grassy hill. Members of the Reagan Freedom Society of New Mexico placed flags on the south side of the pond in remembrance of those who died in the Sept.

Tapping water issues

Zozobra awes first-timers

Candidates late for mayor debate

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo City Councilor Eric Griego was the only mayoral candidate to participate in a debate at the SUB on Wednesday - and he was 45 minutes late. Representatives spoke for candidates Mayor Martin Ch†vez and Brad Winter. A surrogate also spoke for Griego until he arrived.

ARTS Lab director joins film council

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Ed Angel said he hopes his new position with Gov. Bill Richardson will help future UNM graduates get fun, well-paid jobs in New Mexico. "I would like there to be jobs in New Mexico," he said. "We need steady, year-round work." Angel, who is the director of the Art, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory at UNM, was appointed to the Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries in August.

NM houses evacuees

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Lisa Atwa said she is a little nervous to donate rooms in her house to evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. "But I just kind of went on faith that the people who come would be good and appreciative," she said. Atwa, a graduate student in the nursing program at UNM, is one of more than 1,600 New Mexicans to offer more than 4,700 free rooms in their homes for the evacuees staying at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

UNM summit held on tribal recruiting

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo American Indian tribal leaders from New Mexico expressed their frustration toward UNM leaders Tuesday at a summit on higher education. Everett Chavez, governor of Santo Domingo reservation, said young American Indians should not have to go to New Mexico State or Arizona State to receive a college education when UNM is closer to their home.

Agora raises suicide awareness

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Koren Stewart, Mrs. New Mexico 2005, spoke to a small crowd on Smith Plaza about suicide prevention. She said people should watch closely for signs that their friends or family members are at risk of committing suicide. "Watch for hopelessness, rage, uncontrolled anger, acting reckless or engaging in risky activity seemingly without thinking," she said.

Military policy on gays discussed

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo John Hutson, a former U.S. Navy admiral, said he believes homosexuals should be able to serve openly in the military. He told a room of about 15 UNM students and faculty Tuesday at the UNM School of Law that allowing gays into the military may create some problems, but nothing that cannot be solved.

N.M. provides comfort to evacuees

by Jessica Del Curto Daily Lobo Alijsha Maxwell said sleeping on a cot at the Albuquerque Convention Center was a luxury compared to what he was used to. "It's better than where we were. We were standing in water, with the mosquitoes," he said, looking down at his white sneakers.

Club collects donations at tailgate party

by Sunnie Redhouse Daily Lobo Students and community members took time out of tailgating to make donations for Hurricane Katrina victims and survivors. UNM's Red Cross Club had a booth at South Lot to collect donations before Monday's football game. "It's a chance to help out people in need," student Matt Andrews said.

Gay men not allowed to give blood

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Student Marshall Martinez decided to do his part to help victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating blood. However, a United Blood Services worker told Martinez, who is gay, that he had a permanent deferral on his name, which means he can never donate blood.

ASUNM's Community Experience, the Student Activities Center and Greek Life are placing orange buckets at the SUB and across campus all week for donations. To donate to UNM's Red Cross Club, contact Alexis Day at redcross@unm.edu Road Runner Food Bank is looking for volunteers and donations.
