A celebration of freedom

The event celebrated Mexico's 195th anniversary of independence from Spain on Sept. 16. Alex Salcido, student coordinator of the event, said the day is equivalent to U.

Students showcase vintage nurse attire

by Maria DeBlassie Daily Lobo About 14 students from the Student Nursing Association modeled nurse uniforms Friday to show the progress the profession has made in the past 100 years. "The nursing uniforms have changed, kind of indicative of the change that's been going on in nursing," said Sandra Ferketich, dean and alumna of UNM's College of Nursing.

Berthold denied teaching position

Staff Report Richard Berthold will not be allowed to teach at the University after all. UNM Provost Reed Dasenbrock announced Friday he rejected the Honors Department's proposal to allow Berthold to teach a course on Greek history. He said in a news release the matter is confidential and will not be discussed publicly.

Rally '05

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo A crowd of about 400 cheered as an 18-foot Aggie - NMSU's mascot - was engulfed in flames in the middle of Johnson Field on Thursday night. The Aggie was on top of a bonfire, which was ignited after the crowd chanted "burn the Aggie.

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The American Civil Liberties Union is concerned UNM men's basketball head coach Ritchie McKay is using his job to spread religion to his players. Peter Simonson, the executive director of New Mexico's ACLU, said McKay has crossed the line when it comes to separating his religion and his coaching.

Mayor, students talk youth issues

SUB barber offers cheap cuts

by Bryant Hammonds Daily Lobo Paul Panas said cutting hair is a big part of his life. "Cutting hair has always been in my blood," he said. Model Hook It Up Barber and Salon opened Sept. 7 in the SUB next to the fitness center. Davina Panas, co-owner of the barber and salon, said she and her husband, Paul, have styled hair for Adam Sandler, Nelly, Burt Reynolds, Kim Basinger and Tom Hanks.

Visiting prof brings Einstein to undergrads

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Len Zane, a visiting professor at UNM, said it is a happy coincidence he is teaching in 2005, 100 years after Albert Einstein published the theory of special relativity. "It worked out real nicely to have the classes I'm teaching on the 100th anniversary of Einstein's big year," he said.

Controversial professor returns to teach honors

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo He's back. Richard Berthold, a history professor who retired from UNM after making a controversial remark about Sept. 11, 2001, during a lecture, will be teaching an honors course in the spring 2006 semester. Rosalie Otero, director of the University Honors Program, said Berthold presented the department with a class proposal in August.

Women of wartime

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Barbara Pickering said she envies women who serve in the military today. "Ninety-seven percent of us were stuck behind desks with a typewriter," said Pickering, a Vietnam veteran. "Now they are doctors and pilots." Pickering was one of four Navajo women veterans who spoke about their experience in the military Monday in Zimmerman Library.

Students' dogs fixed for free

by Marian Chavez Daily Lobo About 40 UNM students took advantage of a free spaying or neutering of their dogs on Saturday. Brenda Myer, an employee at the Eastside Animal Care Center, said some students had more than one dog they got fixed. "So we've probably done at least 50 animals," Myer said.

Group gets students to remember Sept. 11

by Aidan Turowski Daily Lobo Students passing by the Duck Pond on Friday witnessed thousands of miniature American flags decorating a grassy hill. Members of the Reagan Freedom Society of New Mexico placed flags on the south side of the pond in remembrance of those who died in the Sept.

Tapping water issues

by Xochitl Campos Daily Lobo Water is the lifeblood of New Mexico, said Jose Rivera. "Without water on the land there would be no life," he said. Rivera, who spoke on the cultural and historical importance of water, was one of the many water specialists speaking at a forum in the SUB on Friday.

Candidates late for mayor debate

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo City Councilor Eric Griego was the only mayoral candidate to participate in a debate at the SUB on Wednesday - and he was 45 minutes late. Representatives spoke for candidates Mayor Martin Ch†vez and Brad Winter. A surrogate also spoke for Griego until he arrived.

ARTS Lab director joins film council

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Ed Angel said he hopes his new position with Gov. Bill Richardson will help future UNM graduates get fun, well-paid jobs in New Mexico. "I would like there to be jobs in New Mexico," he said. "We need steady, year-round work." Angel, who is the director of the Art, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory at UNM, was appointed to the Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries in August.
