Crime Watch

Aug. 16 UNM police officers were dispatched to Tucker Avenue and Yale Boulevard in response to vandalism. According to the police report, the woman who reported the vandalism saw the passenger of a black truck get out and break the window of a car. According to the report, the owner of the car said nothing was missing.

Starbucks opens in library

At 3 p.m. Tuesday there were about 10 people waiting in line at Zimmerman Library - and not to check out books. Zimmerman opened a Starbucks coffee shop in its lobby Monday. It's the first Starbucks to open in a university library in the country. Store manager Elizabeth Clark said the store had been busy since it opened.

High school up, running

High Tech High got off to a smooth start - mostly. Monica Summers, a humanities teacher at the school, said there were some early problems with the software that is supposed to stop students from using classroom computers to visit inappropriate Web sites. She said the software did its job a little too well, even preventing students from visiting the PBS Web site.

Students get cake and eat it too

by Tamara Gaskill Daily Lobo There doesn't need to be a reason to get ice cream. That's what UNM President Louis Caldera said Monday about the ice cream social held on the lawn of the University House. "We always have ice cream on the first day of school," he said.

Students enjoy using SUB fitness center

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Student Brant Kay said the SUB fitness center met his needs perfectly. He had to leave the weight room in Johnson Center because a weightlifting class was about to begin. "I got booted out of there," he said. "The free weights here were really just what I was looking for.

Aid disbursement smooth sailing

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo UNM student Nathan Engquist said he could sum up last year's financial aid disbursement in one word. "Chaotic," he said. But this year Engquist, along with many other students who are receiving financial aid, won't have to wait in line very long.

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo At 17 years old, J.J. Stephens found himself living on the streets of Albuquerque. Two years later, he thanked the staff of CASAA's drop-in clinic for keeping him alive. "If it wasn't for them, I don't know where I'd be," he said.

Students give IDs to unknown man

Staff Report Cmdr. James Daniels of the UNM Police Department said two students were robbed on campus early Monday morning. Daniels said the students were robbed around 2 a.m. The students were not together at the time of the robberies, he said. The incidents took place in the parking lot between Coronado and Alvarado dormitories, he said.

Guard remembers slain cops

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Mike King celebrated his 49th birthday last year by driving his motorcycle to San Diego with a friend and jumping into the Pacific Ocean. "Then they got some coffee and came back to New Mexico," said Connie Kawcak, a longtime friend and neighbor of King.

Regents abandon executive bonuses

Staff Report The UNM Board of Regents voted unanimously to rescind an executive bonus plan Tuesday. UNM President Louis Caldera said the plan was a pilot project to give University executives bonuses of up to 20 percent of their salaries based on individual performance.

Freshmen get shirts, hot dogs, jump start

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Student Tylor Nelson said the medieval-inspired caps and gowns worn by faculty at Sunday's freshman convocation made him and his friends think they were in a Harry Potter book. "We just felt like we were at Hogwarts the whole time," he said.

University bonds in high demand

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Andrew Cullen, UNM budget administrator, said he is thrilled with the outcome of the recent $125 million bond sale. "We hit a couple of good days in the market," he said. UNM will pay 4.5 percent interest on the bonds. Cullen expected the University to pay about 4.
