1st day's efforts gather $500

Military policy on gays discussed

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo John Hutson, a former U.S. Navy admiral, said he believes homosexuals should be able to serve openly in the military. He told a room of about 15 UNM students and faculty Tuesday at the UNM School of Law that allowing gays into the military may create some problems, but nothing that cannot be solved.

Club collects donations at tailgate party

by Sunnie Redhouse Daily Lobo Students and community members took time out of tailgating to make donations for Hurricane Katrina victims and survivors. UNM's Red Cross Club had a booth at South Lot to collect donations before Monday's football game. "It's a chance to help out people in need," student Matt Andrews said.

Gay men not allowed to give blood

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Student Marshall Martinez decided to do his part to help victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating blood. However, a United Blood Services worker told Martinez, who is gay, that he had a permanent deferral on his name, which means he can never donate blood.

ASUNM's Community Experience, the Student Activities Center and Greek Life are placing orange buckets at the SUB and across campus all week for donations. To donate to UNM's Red Cross Club, contact Alexis Day at redcross@unm.edu Road Runner Food Bank is looking for volunteers and donations.

Students affected by hurricane get free ride at UNM

Staff Report UNM President Louis Caldera announced Saturday the University will pay tuition costs for students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. "These are extraordinary circumstances," Caldera said in a news release. "And as a university, we are reaching out to support these students.

UNM takes in 10 affected by storm

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Avram Penner had been at Tulane University in New Orleans for only an hour before he had to evacuate. "My friend just told me it wasn't worth staying," he said. Penner is one of 10 students enrolling at UNM after hurricane Katrina forced the closing of several universities on the Gulf Coast on Monday.

Game room swaps pinball for Xbox

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Students planning on playing arcade games in the SUB game room will have to look elsewhere. The former cUeNM game room in the SUB is now managed by TechSmiths and will take its name. TechSmiths has replaced the air hockey table and the various arcade games with Microsoft Xbox game consoles and computers.

Centennial Library reopens after flood

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo The University spent $2.3 million dollars to repair Centennial Library after a pipe froze and burst last December, spilling more than 40,000 gallons of water into the building. While some areas were accessible to students in March, the entire library was reopened Wednesday after nine months of construction.

Pirating students face the music

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Piracy is alive and well at UNM, and not the kind that involves eye patches and walking the plank. One student, who asked not to be named, said he downloads virtually everything on his dorm computer for free, using file-sharing programs BitTorrent and Soulseek.

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Clovis Acosta, director of Parking and Transportation Services, answered the call of duty Wednesday - literally. Acosta published his phone number in Tuesday's edition of the Daily Lobo in an attempt to fix potential problems with UNM's courtesy shuttle service.

Mayor's class finally in session

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo With 35 days left until the election, Mayor Martin Ch†vez is still finding time to teach a class at UNM between campaign efforts. Ch†vez is teaching a class called Careers in City and State Government this fall. He said he didn't have any first-day jitters about teaching.

Students sit like sardines on shuttles

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Tessa Sheehan would rather take the city bus to UNM than ride the courtesy shuttles provided by the school from South Lot. "I can take the city bus for 70 cents a day," Sheehan said. "It's probably a lot more comfortable too."

Caldera turns down bonus

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo UNM President Louis Caldera will probably not get a $25,000 bonus this year. He said the decision to not award him a bonus is not final and may be discussed at the next Board of Regents meeting in September. "The whole process is sort of winding down," he said.

DWI arrest leads to player's suspension

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Backup quarterback Chris Nelson was suspended Monday by UNM football head coach Rocky Long after a DWI arrest. Nelson was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged with an aggravated count of DWI. Long said Nelson will not be able to play in the Lobos' first game against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Sept.

UNM radio gets station makeover

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Rachel Kaub, radio operations manager at KUNM, said the station's studios used to resemble an aging dormitory. "Until this renovation we had a men's room with a shower and sinks," she said. The reopening of the studio took place Saturday.

Public debates ban on all-ages shows

by Maria DeBlassie Daily Lobo "Mad Dog" Chad Zollo is upset over Mayor Martin Ch†vez's proposal to ban all-ages shows where alcohol is served. Zollo showed up to Civic Plaza on Friday morning to protest the proposal. "It's these kids that come to my shows that buy the clothing on my back," said Zollo, who is the drummer for the band 12 Step Rebels.

$125,000 raised at athletics auction

by Danila Crespin Daily Lobo The UNM Athletic Department hit a home run at this year's fund-raiser Saturday night. More than $125,000 worth of items were auctioned off to raise money for student-athlete scholarships. The auctioned items ranged from UNM sports memorabilia to weekend getaways in places like Hawaii and San Diego.
