Broken vents cause stink in Mitchell Hall

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo The bad odor in Mitchell Hall should be nonexistent, said Joel Straquadine, manager of Facilities Maintenance. Straquadine said a complaint was filed with Physical Plant on Friday about a bad odor lingering in Mitchell Hall.

Lobo arrested at bar

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo According to a criminal complaint, UNM men's basketball player Aaron Johnson was charged with four counts of battery on Albuquerque police officers early Sunday morning. In a statement released Sunday, head coach Ritchie McKay said he dismissed Johnson from the basketball team.

Car catches fire in parking structure

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Smoke rose from the Cornell Parking Structure Tuesday afternoon when a vehicle caught fire. Joe Finley, a sophomore at UNM, said he was walking to his vehicle when he smelled burning wires and saw smoke rising from a vehicle.

Mesa del Sol plan gets OK from regents

Staff Report The UNM Board of Regents approved a deal Friday to develop a 1,300-acre Mesa del Sol property in the southeast mesa area. Karen Wentworth, a spokeswoman for UNM, said the property is still in escrow and the University is hoping to finalize the deal by spring.

Hurricane victims discuss racism

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Scott Pierson, who evacuated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, said he is experiencing reverse racism from relief organizations. "Because I'm not black, or a mother with kids, I can't seem to get any help," he said.

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Marilu Ugalde, a student from West Mesa High School, said getting free food was her favorite part of UNM's celebration of Albuquerque's tricentennial. She said her second favorite part was learning what would be available to her if she came to the University.

35-year career earns professor faculty award

Medics answer call of hurricane

Staff report UNM's Disaster Medical Assistance Team has been sent to the Gulf Coast region for the second time this month. DMAT, a FEMA team sponsored by the University, has sent 34 medical personnel to Texas to aid potential victims of Hurricane Rita.

by Danila Crespin Daily Lobo Freshman Nicole Freeman said she learned what binge drinking is on Thursday. "I didn't know that four drinks in two hours is binge drinking," she said. "Every day we are dealing with these issues, and people ignore them, because we don't know where to go to find information on them.

Campus crime rates down

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo UNM crime statistics for 2004 show a decrease in assaults and thefts on campus from 2003. The statistics were released Sept. 9. There were three reported forced sexual assaults last year, and five in 2003. Reports of aggravated assault also declined from 12 in 2003 to six in 2004.

Mysterious odor fouls up building

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Terry Garza said the Surge building started to smell bad in April. "It was funny," said Garza, who works in the building. "Nobody wanted to mention it because it smelled like sewer." She said the smell eventually worsened and her co-workers started to complain.

Remembering a man of service

"When he was interviewed for the job, they asked if he was worried about his house being bombed," she said.

Berthold: UNM limits free speech

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Richard Berthold said the needs of UNM's administration trump those of students by not letting him return to the University to teach. "And more sadly, the faculty is once more permitting an administrator to dictate to an academic department who they can and cannot hire," he said in an e-mail Monday.

Alumni to take over Hodgin Hall

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo The UNM Alumni Association no longer has to share Hodgin Hall. Karen Abraham, director of alumni relations, said they have waited a long time for the decision. "All along, for the last 22, 23 years, it has been intended that the building would be called the alumni center," Abraham said.
