Fund-raiser puts cancer on the run

by Apollonia Trujillo Daily Lobo UNM athletes and students participated in the sixth annual Run for Relief on Sunday to help fight cancer. The participants were sponsored by outside contributors who donate an amount for every mile completed or donate a flat amount.

Unidentified woman found dead at UNM

Staff Report A woman was found dead behind University Stadium at South Lot on Sunday afternoon, said Lt. Pat Davis of the UNM Police Department. The Albuquerque Police Department received a call at 1:15 p.m. about a woman who was unconscious at the corner of Kathryn Drive and Buena Vista Street, Davis said.

Tourney puts brains to the test

by Matt Gomez Daily Lobo Twelve teams tested their buzzer-hand reflexes, pressure-handling abilities and knowledge Saturday in UNM's College Bowl campus tournament. The tournament was the second one at UNM. Jessica Cheatwood-Alvarez, student activities specialist, said the tournament had taken a 40-year hiatus before last year.

Regent picked as treasurer

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Gov. Bill Richardson named Regent Doug Brown the interim state treasurer on Thursday. He will begin Monday. He will remain in the position until the election in November 2006 - with the promise he will not run for the position, which was required by the search committee.

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo About 300 African-American high school students from across New Mexico visited the campus Thursday to see what UNM is all about. Scott Carreathers, director of African American Student Services, said African-American Student Day is organized to expose students to post-secondary education and the University.

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Students had mixed feelings about a fair meant to help them choose a major. Advisers and representatives of about 60 UNM departments sat at booths in Dane Smith Hall's atrium Wednesday to talk to students and pass out fliers about different degree programs.

Students summon the dead in memory

by Aubrey Montoya Daily Lobo Student Isaac Casas grew up celebrating Dia de Los Muertos with his family. "We all went to the cemetery on that day and would feast there with loved ones," he said. "We put a little altar there for them." Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration to remember the lives of loved ones who have passed away, Casas said.

Student crowned Miss N.M.

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo There has not been a Miss USA from New Mexico since 1984. Student Onawa Lynn Lacy said it is time that changes. "I'll bring it back," she said. Lacy, a double-major in English and Native American Studies, beat out 15 other girls from around the state to become Miss New Mexico on Saturday.

Blood drive's 1st day draws 100 donors

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo UNM student Veronica Soliz tells her friends not to be afraid - it only hurts for two seconds. "Stubbing your toe hurts more," Soliz said. "Just try it." Soliz was one of 100 people who participated in the first day of a blood drive on Monday in the SUB Ballroom.

Predator triumphs in costume contest

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Ghosts, goblins and monsters roamed through the UNM Bookstore on Monday for a Halloween costume contest. The first-place winner, David Jackson, was the Predator from the movie "Alien vs. Predator." The second-place winner, Satoshi Shimada, went as a samurai warrior, and the third-place winner called herself "The Shower Lady," which was a lady dressed like she was taking a shower.

Stargazers take close look at Mars

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo Mars was the attraction at LodeStar Astronomy Center on Saturday night. Michael Sepulveda, observatory director, said he was excited about the proximity of the Red Planet because Mars is 69 million kilometers from Earth and is the closest it will be until the year 2018.

Author makes case for murder

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Democratic U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone and his family died in a plane crash in October 2002. Reports attribute it to bad weather. Four Arrows thinks differently. Arrows, co-author of American Assassination: The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone, said his intuition told him it was a political assassination.

Antique show raises dough

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo On Saturday, the Hibben Center lobby resembled an episode of PBS's "Antiques Roadshow." Local antique dealers sat behind tables and appraised items brought to them. Appraisers charged $5 per item. The money went to the Maxwell Museum Association, which organized the event.

Students fast to help feed the homeless

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Students went hungry Thursday to help provide food for the needy. UNM's third annual Ramadan Fast-A-Thon took place from sunrise at 7:23 a.m. until sunset at 6:17 p.m. The fast, hosted by UNM's Muslim Student Association, is a program where a person pledges to fast for one day.
