New education center named after Domenici

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo UNM President Louis Caldera said despite the rain Monday morning, it was a good day for the University. "The sun isn't out, but it's beautiful because it marks a great day in our progress as a University and for our Health Sciences Center," he said.

Exploring Arab rights in U.S.

by Mandy Stevens Daily Lobo Professor Jennifer Moore said in 2002, the estimated number of Arabs and Muslims who were arrested and detained following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was 5,000. By 2003, there was an estimated 12,000 people detained, she said, and not one of them was convicted of a terrorism-related crime.

From student to director

by Jason Kleymann Daily Lobo UNM's Office of Equal Opportunity will be getting another leader. Arthur Gonzales, benefits manager for Human Relations at UNM, will take over as director of the Office of Equal Opportunity on Oct. 17. Gonzales has been at UNM for 28 years.

A bittersweet run for Homecoming

Police auction seized bicycles

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Going once. Going twice. Sold. Karen Bowman, who works in the records division of the UNM Police Department, helped auction off 65 bicycles on Friday at the Duck Pond. The auction was an effort to get rid of bicycles confiscated by the UNM Police Department from the past year, Bowman said.

Air Force sued for discrimination

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Eight hours after he filed a suit against the U.S. Air Force, Mikey Weinstein, an Albuquerque resident, spoke to UNM students and faculty members Thursday evening at the School of Law. Weinstein, a 1977 graduate of the U.

A fair shot at career head start

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Kenneth Gonzales, a UNM graduate, said he got his job with IBM about five years ago by attending a job fair. After going to several fairs, he got to know the manager who hired him, he said. About 800 students attended the 25th annual Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization Career Fair on Thursday.

World Food Day, which is Oct. 15, was celebrated early by UNM's Student Health Center because of Fall Break, said Maya Trujillo of Peer Educators.

Honoring the Navajo language

Dineh Tah Navajo Dancers entertained an audience of about 100 people Wednesday night for the 35th anniversary of Navajo language instruction at UNM.

Campus polls convenient for residents

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Student residents didn't have to go out of their way to vote in the city election on Tuesday. Students living on campus were able to cast their vote at the SRC Commons Building. Anyone registered in precinct 049 was able to vote on campus.

Students tour study abroad opportunities

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Dane Smith Hall was filled with about 25 booths advertising study abroad opportunities for students on Tuesday. The booths were run by UNM groups and several other colleges and private organizations. One booth, run by a student travel magazine, gave students a chance to win a $1,000 airplane ticket to anywhere in the world.

Damage done by skaters declines

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo UNM Physical Plant spent more than $5,000 last year repairing building damages created by skateboarders. Joel Straquadine, manager of facilities maintenance, said that money could be used for better things, like repairs and paint jobs to old buildings.

Aiming to help United Way

by Annette Herrera Daily Lobo The UNM Young Leaders' Society and UNM President Louis Caldera encouraged faculty and staff to donate to United Way at a brown bag lunch at the SUB on Monday. Caldera said faculty and staff could support United Way through a one-time annual donation or a monthly payroll deduction.

He was calling undecided voters on Monday trying to sway their decision for today's election. "People like the fact that mayor candidates take the time to talk to them," he said while taking a break.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta lifts off

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo About an hour before the sun peered over the Sandia Mountains on Sunday, UNM alumna Anna Nichols watched 12 balloons illuminate the sky. "It's sweet," said Nichols, who attended the opening weekend of the 33rd annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Campus made over during Fall Frenzy

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Chelsea Armstrong, director of ASUNM Community Experience, said Fall Frenzy was a success, despite difficulties in recruiting volunteers. Armstrong, who organized the Sept. 30 event, said in the end, it didn't matter how many people volunteered, but the kind of people who donated their time.

Architect accepts alumni award

by Amanda Stevens Daily Lobo Van Gilbert, a local architect whose projects include the Albuquerque Aquarium and the Lobo Tennis Club, gave a tearful thank you to his family as he accepted a UNM alumni award. "This is a man who never breaks a sweat," said Gilbert's former colleague and friend, Pam Hurd-Knief.

Center surveys women at UNM

by Aidan Turowski Daily Lobo The Women's Resource Center is conducting a survey to find whether women feel they are treated equally at UNM. The survey began Sept. 6, and results will be available Nov. 31. Sandrea Gonzales, director of the Women's Resource Center, said the 150-question survey will explore the issues that affect women - such as equality, fairness and how they feel about their treatment on campus.
