In college, Schmidly did enough to get by

UNM President David Schmidly didn't know what he wanted to do when he started college in the early '60s. "I was interested in basketball and girls," he said. "Academics was the last thing on my list of priorities." Schmidly started his tenure as the University's 20th president on June 1.

Daily Lobo How-to:

The Internet is the best place to start looking for scholarships. The Financial Aid Office lists scholarships that are available through UNM at its Web site, Unm.edu/~finaid. The Web site also has links to search engines where students can enter their information and search for national scholarships.

Q&A: Reed Dasenbrock

The House of Representatives passed the College Cost Reduction Act on July 11. The act is designed to cut college costs by increasing federal financial aid. It would reduce the amount of subsidies the federal government pays to lenders, and that money would be put into federal financial aid.


Construction of the Centennial Engineering Center is on schedule and it is expected to open by fall 2008.

Building to foster community

You don't need to major in engineering to take advantage of the Centennial Engineering Center when it opens next year. "The University is investing in ... not just engineering - engineering plus all interdisciplinary programs, which we have with every other college," said Joseph Cecchi, dean of the engineering school.

Services aim to make campus bicycle-friendly

If you catch Tour de France fever, riding your bicycle to campus may be the cure. UNM offers services to encourage students to choose biking over driving, said Cynthia Martin, program planning manager for Parking and Transportation Services.

UNMPD: Suspected bike thief arrested

Staff Report For now, it's safer to park your bicycle on campus than it was last semester. UNM Police arrested a man believed to be responsible for most of the bicycle thefts at the University, said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department. "This is a suspect that has a large criminal history of larceny," he said.


UNM Hospital's Lifeguard nurses unload a patient from their airplane that arrived from Santa Rosa on July 16 at Albuquerque International Sunport. The hospital uses the plane to transport patients who are in critical condition.

Johnson Field to get lights in time for fall semester

After seven years of lobbying and fundraising, ASUNM will soon fulfill its goal of installing lights on Johnson Field. "The lights make the University more like a university," former ASUNM President Brittany Jaeger said. "I went to about 12 other universities to see what they were doing, and of all 12, only one didn't have lights on their recreational field."

Rapid Ride extends route to West Side

Students who commute from the West Side can sit back and surf the Internet if they ride Rapid Ride. The city extended the Rapid Ride bus service to Albuquerque's West Side on July 7. Now is a great time to hop on the route and try it out, said Greg Payne, director of transit for the city.

19th century recipes can spice up students' cuisine

This isn't your grandmother's cookbook, but it might be your great-great-grandmother's cookbook. One of the Center for Southwest Research's recent acquisitions is "El Libro de Cocina" by French chef Jules GouffÇ. It is a Mexican edition of a classic Spanish cookbook similar to the modern "The Joy of Cooking," said Mike Kelly, the center's director.

Judge's ruling doesn't dismiss RIAA's case

A federal judge in New Mexico denied a request to subpoena UNM for the personal information of Internet users suspected of music piracy. Negotiations between UNM and the Recording Industry Association of America should begin this week to find the best way to release the information, UNM lawyer Richard Mertz said.

Free bus rides for students to begin fall semester

Students fed up with UNM's parking situation have another option starting in the fall, a state representative said. ABQ Ride will offer free bus service anywhere in the city for UNM students beginning Aug. 20. "At that time, all UNM students will have access to any bus route at any time of the day," said Rep.

'New Mexican Hollywood' in the works

A new program is in the works that lets students create superheroes, design alien worlds and look inside the human body without cutting it open. And you don't have to be a computer science major to enroll. UNM's film and digital media program will offer bachelor's and master's degrees with concentrations in engineering, fine arts, business and arts and sciences.
