AP: Chief of intelligence details surveillance

WASHINGTON - National Intelligence Director Mike Mc- Connell pulled the curtain back on previously classified details of government surveillance and of a secretive court whose recent rul- ings created new hurdles for the Bush administration as it tries to prevent terrorism.

Summer a busy time for UNM Police Dept.

While most students were on summer vacation, the UNM Police Department was on campus fighting crime. "We are not taking the summer off, and we are still working and solving cases," said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department. "We want offenders to know that if they are going to come here and victimize our folks, then we are going to look for them."

Freshman Ryan Mals said he got a bad impression of the dorms when he stayed at the Student Resource Center for freshmen orientation. "There were vomit stains in the bathroom," he said. "It was disgusting."

Bookstore may not offer best bargains

Student Debbie Nelson spent only $150 on textbooks this semester. "I got lucky," she said. "They rip us off." Nelson said the $150 bill was a relief after she spent $500 on books last year.

Math, science charter school moves to UNM

A charter school that lets high school students take college courses for free has a new home at UNM. Representatives from the city, the state and UNM celebrated the opening of the new facility Saturday for the Albuquerque Institute for Mathematics and Science at UNM at 933 Bradbury Drive S.E.

UNM, CNM unite in Rio Rancho

The two largest higher education institutions in the state have joined forces. The Board of Regents approved an agreement between UNM and Central New Mexico Community College at its meeting Tuesday. The agreement outlines how UNM and CNM will work together in Rio Rancho, CNM President Kathie Winograd said.

Frat member arrested on sex assault charges

The alumni adviser to UNM's Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter was the father of pledge Michael McGuffin, who was arrested Tuesday on rape charges. John McGuffin's position as adviser did not afford his son any special treatment, a spokesman for the fraternity said.

Ten students indicted in Bookstore theft case

A little more than a year after authorities were tipped off about a theft ring at the UNM Bookstore, the case is almost closed. Ten students were indicted; two of them have been sentenced to conditional probation, seven were deferred to pre-prosecution probation and one awaits sentencing, said Chris Schultz, assistant district attorney.

Friendly rivalry gets medieval

If you see a group of guys at Roosevelt Park next weekend attacking each other with steel swords, don't be alarmed. There will be a tournament noon on Saturday at Roosevelt Park for Intense Medieval Combat, a group of people who battle with real weapons and armor constructed in medieval design.


Students and staff have left cards and flowers outside UNM associate history professor Tim Moy's office in Mesa Vista Hall. Moy drowned July 22 at Kailua Beach, Hawaii, while trying to help his 12-year-old son, who was having difficulty swimming.

Professor captivated his students, inspired faculty

David Moy said his son, Tim, was a great teacher, even as a child. "He always liked to teach or explain things, whether it was to his younger sister, cousins, classmates or friends," David Moy said. "He loved to explain how things work and why, and he was very patient and would always get into a great level of detail without making things difficult to understand."

Frat house resident arrested on rape charges

UNM Police arrested a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity on charges of raping a minor. Michael McGiffin, 24, was arrested on 11 felony counts, including criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact with a minor and sexual exploitation of children, said Lt.
