There were no tight races in Tuesday's City Council election. Rey Gardu§o took District 6 with almost 49 percent of the votes, defeating Kevin Wilson, Joanie Griffin and Blair Kaufman. District 6 encompasses the University area.

UNM to sell $160M in bonds to fund construction projects

UNM wants $160 million for construction projects and plans to get that money from investors around the country. The Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee approved parameters for the 2007-08 Institutional Bond Sale at its meeting Tuesday.

First-year retention rates

More students returned to UNM as sophomores this year than ever before, a school official said. The first-year freshman retention rate is 76.6 percent this year, up about 1 percent from last year, Vice Provost Peter White said. The Hispanic freshman retention rate is 76.

AP: Israel frees 57 Palestinians

BEITUNIYA CHECKPOINT, West Bank - Greeted by throngs of jubilant well-wishers, 57 Palestinian prisoners got off buses Monday and kissed West Bank ground after Israel freed them in a goodwill gesture ahead of a U.S.-sponsored peace conference. But the goodwill was tempered by Israeli plans to inaugurate a West Bank police headquarters in an area whose settlement has been blocked by the U.

Voting begins today for City Council Race

Students who want a job when they graduate should vote in today's City Council election, political science professor Tim Krebs said. "Everybody wants to leave college and have a job waiting for them," he said. "Local policies are going to affect that, as well, in terms of the success of the local government in making or helping to produce an economy.

There are many things students can do to help save the world, but they don't always have the time, student Ansel Blumenthal said. Members of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship were at Smith Plaza on Monday talking to students about orphans of the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

David Schmidly will be inaugurated as UNM's 20th president on Sunday, and there are activities leading up to it all week. Schmidly said the theme for inauguration week is "Connect" because having a good relationship with the University is crucial to student success.

Jonathan Kozol said he is tired of seeing children in inner-city schools treated like machines. "In a lot of schools, they don't refer to children as children anymore," he said. "They train our kids to give the answers, the predictable answers."

RIAA subpoenas University

UNM received a subpoena Thursday from the Recording Industry Association of America, demanding the University release the names of 16 UNM network users suspected of illegal file sharing.
