Instructor Charles Truxillo said the Chicano Studies program won't renew his contract in the spring because of his ideological beliefs. Truxillo said he is well-known nationally as a Chicano nationalist and has been featured in books by Pat Buchanan.

State treasurer speaks on ethics in government

State Treasurer James Lewis said government officials must work for the public, not themselves. "As a public servant, it's not I. It's not you and me. It's us," he said. "If you have the I or the me at the forefront, that's a problem."

Community addresses concerns with plans to develop golf course (Video)

UNM President David Schmidly got booed at a meeting Sunday when he showed an artist's rendition of a retirement community that could be built on the North Golf Course. About 200 people attended the meeting at the law school to discuss possible development of the course with Schmidly and other UNM administrators.

Students get taste of the IRS

Not everyone at the IRS has a desk job. Some agents spend their days digging through trash and installing wiretaps, IRS special agent Jerry Gomez said. The agents, known as certified forensic examiners, investigate tax fraud and enforce tax laws, Gomez said.

Zimmerman Library opens

Zimmerman Library opened Thursday afternoon after a flood in the basement forced it to close Wednesday. It was closed for almost 24 hours while workers pumped and vacuumed water out of the basement and checked for damage to electric lines. The basement was closed for renovation after a fire in 2006.

UNM provides alternative for campus commuters

Loyola Chastain used to fight traffic every day on a 100-mile round-trip commute to UNM, but not anymore. Chastain, manager of academic advisement at the Anderson Schools of Management, is in the University's vanpooling program. "The vanpool is terrific," she said.

City extends free bus rides to students at CNM

UNM students have been able to ride city buses for free since August, and now CNM students can do the same. The program extended to include CNM students after Mayor Martin Chavez met with the community college's president, Kathie Winograd, said Greg Payne, director of transit for ABQRide.

Zimmerman basement floods

About 500 people evacuated Zimmerman Library on Wednesday after a water pipe burst, flooding the basement. The library had to be cleared, and the power was shut off while clean-up crews drained the water, said Joel Straquadine, facilities maintenance manager of Physical Plant.

About 500 students were evacuated from Zimmerman Library on Wednesday afternoon after a 10-inch water pipe burst and flooded the basement. The library had to be cleared and the power shut off until Physical Plant workers could assess if the flood damaged any electric lines, said Joel Straquadine, facilities maintenance manager.

Staff Report UNM got a C for sustainability. The Sustainability Endowment Institute released its 2008 Campus Sustainability Report Card on Wednesday. The report covers the 200 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada with the largest endowment funds.

Fair to encourage volunteerism in UNM community

Life can be more problematic than late homework assignments and massive midterms, student Margi Miranda said. "We're college students, and we think we have problems because we can't get our papers done or something," said Miranda, who volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. "But our problems are nothing compared to what some people are going through."

Chavez recruits regent to help raise money for senatorial bid

Staff Report The president of UNM's Board of Regents will help raise money for Mayor Martin Chavez's senatorial campaign. "The mayor's a good friend of mine," Jamie Koch said. "Pete Domenici had that seat since 1973. It'd be great if we could get a Democrat in there and a person who was born and raised in New Mexico.
