"He's the first African-American running for president, and this is a historical event for that," he said.

Man pleads guilty to extreme animal cruelty AZTEC - A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to gunning down nine sheep or goats and a dog while shooting from a truck last summer. Derek Witt accepted a plea this week for three felonies: extreme cruelty to animals, injury to livestock and shooting from a motor vehicle.

UNM gets a 'Star' for energy efficiency

UNM was awarded a 2008 Energy Star for energy efficiency and fuel savings. The Physical Plant Department was awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for producing power and heat with only one fuel source, said Larry Schuster, a utilities engineer in the department.

Candidates are battling for the Democratic nomination, and UNM was part of the battleground Thursday. Former President Bill Clinton spoke to about 500 people at Johnson Gym to campaign for his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. But he wasn't there just because they've been married for 32 years, he said.

Staff Report: Black History Month begins on campus 11 a.m. Friday with a flag-raising ceremony outside of Scholes Hall. President David Schmidly will speak, followed by the raising of the Pan-African flag by students and members of ROTC, African-American Student Services and the community.

C&J department recommended for reaccreditation

The journalism and mass communications programs at UNM haven't been accredited for almost six years, but they took a major step toward reaccreditation Wednesday. A team from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications recommended the program be accredited after a three-day review that began Monday, Communications and Journalism chairman John Oetzel said.

Iraq War: An uncertain future

Almost five years, almost 4,000 U.S. casualties, and the fate of the Iraq War will rest with one presidential candidate. Student Caleb Franzoy, who served two terms in Iraq, said the next president needs to win the war or send the troops home. "There is a job to be done over there, and we need to either do it right or quit and get out," he said.

Students travel to Capitol, ask lawmakers for funding

A cancelled bus trip didn't stop students from participating in UNM Day at the Capitol on Tuesday. Students travel to Santa Fe every year to lobby the Legislature. A bus full of students was scheduled to leave at 7:30 a.m., but the trip was canceled due to icy road conditions.

Governor requests funds for dental school at UNM

There has never been a dental school in New Mexico. But that can change if Gov. Bill Richardson gets his way. Richardson is asking the Legislature for money to create New Mexico's first dental school at UNM. A dental school could be costly, said Mark Moores, director of the New Mexico Dental Association.

Health care in New Mexico

Health care is a hot-button issue for Americans who feel sick and abandoned by modern medicine. But reforming the medical industry has proved divisive. "We are a very expensive health care system, and our health indicators don't really reflect that we're getting good value for the money that we're spending on our health care system," said Beverly Kloeppel, director of the Student Health Center.
