Football: Lobos rebuilding defense

From the outside, it may look like Bob Davie’s long-term plan for the New Mexico football team isn’t working, particularly on defense. UNM’s head coach said he’s not overly concerned about the Lobos’ defensive struggles, pointing out that Baylor’s defense struggled mightily for two seasons under coordinator Phil Bennett before turning it into a top-11 defense this season.

Football: Lobos drop home finale to Colorado State

Powered by running back Kapri Bibbs’ 291 yards and six touchdowns, Colorado State defeated New Mexico 59-42 in the Lobos’ home finale at University Stadium. Bibbs six scores tied the Mountain West Conference record for most rushing touchdowns in a single game. Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson had six on Sept. 22, 2013.

Football: Win over Air Force came down to defense

Someone’s defense had to step up in the end. It just so happened that the New Mexico football team’s did after a high-scoring affair that came down to who had the ball last. There was no game-winning drive, but still plenty of drama in UNM’s first Mountain West Conference victory of the season.

Urlacher honored during halftime ceremony

Brian Urlacher, heralded by many as the best New Mexico football player of all time. had his No. 44 officially retired during a halftime ceremony Friday night at University Stadium. Urlacher played for four years in the last 90s before becoming one of the top linebackers in the NFL. Following the ceremony, Urlacher answered questions from Albuquerque media. Here are his responses

Football: Air Force, Lobos evenly matched teams

It’s been tough for the New Mexico football team to get into gear the past three weeks. The Lobos stumbled out of the gate at Wyoming, trailing 21-0 before losing 38-31 on Oct. 12. The following week, UNM was routed 45-10 by Utah State, a game that went downhill after the Lobos fumbled on their first possession of the game.

One more stop was all the New Mexico football team’s defense needed to make. But just as the Lobos have done all season long, they allowed San Diego State to march down the field for the game-clinching score at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif.

College football defenses around the country are struggling to contain offenses and the Mountain West Conference is not immune. Eleven of 12 MWC teams are ranked 76th or lower in total defense with Utah State being the only one ranked higher, having the top defense in the MWC and the No. 19 defense in the country.

COMMENTARY: Lobos don’t need a bowl to savor football season

There’s still a chance for the New Mexico football team to make a bowl game this year — it’s just not a favorable one. Sitting at 2-5 and coming off one of its worst performances in the Bob Davie era — a 45-10 shellacking by Utah State on Oct. 19 — the team’s chances are about as good as the odds of Congress agreeing on what to do with the government.

Loss displays ‘immaturity’

Bob Davie wasn’t angry or disappointed after the New Mexico football team’s 45-10 loss to Utah State on Saturday at University Stadium — he was humbled by the experience. UNM’s second-year head coach said he thought the Aggies exposed how immature the Lobos are.

QBs’ health to decide play

The quarterback situation for the New Mexico football team is the murkiest it’s been all season. UNM’s top two quarterbacks, sophomore Cole Gautsche and junior Clayton Mitchem, are battling injuries. Gautsche suffered a right knee injury in the waning minutes of Saturday’s game at Wyoming.
