Media silence on NY protests alarming

For more than a week a group of demonstrators has been occupying the areas around Wall Street in New York, bearing signs with slogans such as “They only call it class war when we fight back,” and “Just because you can’t see us, doesn’t mean this isn’t happening.” The second sign refers to the media silence surrounding the protests.

Student’s legacy inspires vaccine drive

I’m sitting here at my computer in Houston, Texas and wanted to let you all know that this morning, I “Took One for Raymond” by having my annual flu shot. For those of you who may be new to the UNM campus or have no idea what I’m talking about, I’d like to explain. Raymond is my son.

Low retention warrants more attention

Last week I read an article in the Albuquerque Journal that stated one in four UNM freshmen from 2010 did not return to the University to continue his or her studies in 2011. Last week I read an article in the Albuquerque Journal that stated one in four UNM freshmen from 2010 did not return to the University to continue his or her studies in 2011. I thought to myself, “Hey, this is not good news for UNM. I wonder what Schmidly’s administration has to say about this, and even more importantly, what are they going to do to keep freshmen in school?”

Business model not for classroom

In the last few years, I’ve been to an increasing number of initiatives that use business customer service training as a way to view the duties of a teacher. They always strike me as depressing to attend, because teaching is highly skilled and highly complex, much more so than any of the customer service I’ve done.

Food crusade brings democracy to dinner

Food democracy is a true ‘grassroots’ movement toward sustainable, responsible, healthy and community-based food production and distribution. The food democracy movement asserts that people have the power and the responsibility to actively participate in decisions concerning their food system. The ultimate goal of the food democracy movement is to guarantee that all people have access to “affordable, healthy and culturally appropriate foods.”

Vilified Spongebob teaches tolerance

In this era of almost monthly natural disasters, global climate change, and with what seems like everything from broccoli to Tastykakes contaminated with deadly bacteria, it’s nice to know that the nation’s university professors are researching and conducting studies of the evils of our time, like SpongeBob Squarepants.

Top art programs, decrepit building

by Marjorie Crow Daily Lobo Guest Columnist Concerning the article about building maintenance in Tuesday’s paper, I can’t speak for all UNM buildings, but the Art Building issue is not strictly about maintenance.

TAs are piled high and deep

I always shake the first day of school, and I wonder if the front row smells my fear, or possibly the sweat. Since I’m the only teacher in the classroom, I have to start talking, and I have to appear as competent and nonplussed as possible.

DWI prevention part of orientation

As program manager of UNM’s Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP), I’d like to say a few words in response to Daily Lobo Columnist Will Desmare’s “DWI prevention a shared obligation,” in Monday’s issue. Before I do, let me say that anything that prompts discussion among members of the UNM community regarding this serious problem is by definition positive, so I thank Mr. Desmare for writing on a topic of grave interest to all New Mexicans.

DWI prevention a shared obligation

Last week, I read in the Daily Lobo that college students are more likely to get a DWI. I thought to myself that college students have always been more likely to get a DWI. The article addressed a lot of reasons why, like this is the first time that college students are away from home, and so on.

We must relive 9/11 so we never forget

It’s an early March morning in New York. I’m standing on the corner of Vesey and Church streets in the shadow of a church that the travel guides tell me has seen a lot in its 200-plus-year history, but I’m more interested in the construction site across the street.

Right drugs could lead to better lives

Recreational drug use is, rightly or wrongly, a part of college life. Experimentation with illicit substances can be very enlightening or incredibly destructive, depending on the circumstances and the individual.

Duck Pond service not without sin

On Aug. 28 the Aquinas Newman Center was allowed to hold a public mass at the Duck Pond. The University granted permission and held the event in spite of protesters condemning the ceremony. Unknown to those who missed this gloating occasion was the presence of several attendees who gracefully worshiped in the middle of campus, many of whom did know the annoyance and controversies that they were producing. This ultimately raises the question: Can the Catholic Church, or any church, hold spiritual ceremonies in public areas?

Accusation of racism at Daily Lobo offensive, untrue

Readers, On Monday morning, my staff and I received the following petition from a number of individuals, and it is my desire to let their voice be heard: I just signed the following petition addressed to: Daily Lobo. ———————— _Tell the Daily Lobo to Drop the “I-Word.” According to the Drop the I Word (sic) campaign, “people may be out of status for many reasons, but that doesn’t make them ‘illegal.’ No one should adopt dehumanizing terms that are racially charged, legally innacurate (sic) or deny people due process.” We’re calling for an apology from the editors of the Daily Lobo for using the “i-word” in the caption of the photo on the Daily Lobo’s cover on Friday, September 2.

Fumbles in season opener can be fixed

The smell of grilled hotdogs and burgers in the air, boozed-up football fans and a sea of red stretching from CNM to University Stadium can only mean one thing: it’s the Lobo football home-opener. As expected, the first Lobo football game of the season saw a good turnout, as it had for the last two seasons. There is always a good turnout for the first game, but as the losses pile up, fans just simply look for something less depressing to do.

Socialism not evil, part of history

Over the last few years, I have been hearing the term “socialism” thrown around constantly. Very often the term has a negative connotation, as is the case with barrages of crazy Tea Party supporters who hold up signs claiming “Obama is a Socialist!” Never mind that Obama is, if anything, a painfully bland centrist whose economic views are actually to the right of past Republicans such as Dwight D.
