The University of New Mexico baseball team won a four-game series against the Rhode Island Rams Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2. The Lobos were in a game of tug-of-war with the Rams, but ultimately had a successful series with three wins and one loss.
Friday's game was the first in the series and it truly showed how hard the Lobos were going to have to work that weekend. There was no moment of Friday's game that wasn’t competitive, but they ultimately lost 13-14.
At Saturday's game, the Lobos started the first inning strong, scoring four runs, but the Rams answered right back, scoring three runs in the same inning. The Lobos’ pitching was good throughout due to the constant change-up of pitchers.
“One of the hardest things is managing a pitching staff,” Head Coach Tod Brown said. “It's recognizing what pitchers are starting to drop off, lose velocity and start to lose commands. We try to put our guys in the best position.”
At the top of the ninth inning, the Lobos were up one, and the Rams were unable to make one last run, which led to the Lobos securing a victory 15-14 in the second game.
The last two games of the series were a doubleheader, the first of which was a seven-inning game. The Lobos came into the third game with a bang, leading 6-1 through the first three innings. Pressure and timeliness had to be on point, and through that they secured a victory in this game.
For the remainder of Sunday’s first game, both teams were hungry for the win, but the Lobos’ pitching staff and defense was solid. They won 8-4.
The Lobos started off the first inning of the fourth and final game scoring two runs. The Lobos then had five runs in the third inning. The Rams were not going to take those blows, and they struck back. Both teams fought hard, but in the end, the Lobos took yet another victory, ending the final game 10-9.
Brown said he was satisfied with the result but felt that the Lobos could have had more runs in the third game.
“It really comes down to executing at the right time,” Brown said. “We only had six hits, but we scored. When you score ten runs or more you should win the game — We’ll take it.”
