On the early morning of Sept. 15, the University of New Mexico Police Department received a call from security at UNM Hospital about a man who had been dropped off from a truck at the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was later pronounced dead, according to the police report for the incident.
The driver drove away after dropping the victim off.
UNMH security told UNMPD that the truck had “appeared to be riddled with apparent bullet impacts,” according to the police report.
Security also told UNMPD the truck had a flat front tire. After getting the call, UNMPD saw the truck turn onto Lomas Boulevard and began to follow it.
UNMPD lost sight of the truck. The responding officer later found that it had spun out in the North Valley at the intersection of Candelaria Boulevard and Fourth Street. Nobody was inside the vehicle by the time officers arrived on the scene.
The Albuquerque Police Department responded to the scene, and the driver was not found at the time the UNMPD report was written. The case is listed in the UNMPD daily crime log as “exceptionally cleared,” which occurs when “elements beyond law enforcement’s control prevent the agency from arresting and formally charging the offender,” according to the FBI.
