Track and Field: Men unable to score any points at championships

Five women still set to compete in finals

Despite a top-five finish in the men’s 1500 meter qualifier on Wednesday, the New Mexico men’s track and field team was unable to put up any points at the National Outdoor Championship this year in Eugene, Ore.

Freshman runner Josh Kerr finished 10th in the men’s 1,500-meter final on Friday, bringing a close to the 2016 outdoor track and field season for the men.

Kerr, who got out to a hot start in the qualifier, was unable to do so on Friday. He completed the race in 3:50, nearly nine seconds off the pace he ran on Wednesday.

Senior Allan Hamilton competed in the men’s long jump for the final time on Wednesday. In the finals, he landed a jump of 23 feet, 5 1/2 inches and finished 23rd in the competition.

Elmar Engholm’s decorated collegiate career also came to an end on Wednesday. He finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:37.44, logging a personal record. However, his 14th place finish was not enough to advance.

The New Mexico men’s team was held scoreless at the National Outdoor Championships for the first time since 2006.

Five women are set to compete today as the team tries to make a push in the standings. They are currently tied for eighth place with six other schools with eight points.

Courtney Frerichs, running in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, is looking to avenge a runner-up finish at last year’s national championship. She is scheduled to compete at 4:54 p.m.

Teammates Sophie Conner and Callie Thackery will also try to add more points to the team total as they compete in the finals of the women’s 1500-meter run and 5,000-meter run, respectively.

Conner hits the track at 4:41 p.m., while Thackery’s is slotted as the Lobos’ final competitor at 6:25 p.m.

The Lobos also send a pair of athletes into the women’s triple jump. Jannell Hadnot and Aasha Marler start things off at 4:30. The events can be viewed on ESPN and ESPN3.
