New Mexico head coach Ray Birmingham got his wish.
Following Saturday evening’s 14-4 victory over Nevada for the conference tournament title, Birmingham said he wanted to play somewhere that suited UNM baseball. He said he didn’t want to venture to a ballpark that didn’t allow the Lobos to swing for the fences.
New Mexico was picked to play in Lubbock, Texas as the No. 3 seed. The Lobos will take on Dallas Baptist on Friday night, a team that swept New Mexico in early march at Santa Ana Star Field.
UNM will partake in the bracket that includes Texas Tech, Fairfield, and Dallas Baptists. As one of the top eight seeds in the nation (No. 5), the Red Raiders received an automatic bid to host the tournament.
In the 2016 season, UNM is 0-3 against Dallas Baptist, 1-2 against Texas Tech, and has yet to play Fairfield.
First pitch for UNM is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
