On the verge of breaking into the top-10 best programs in the country, the Lobos stumbled at the Cowtown Classic this past weekend.
Head coach Jeff Nelson said in a release that the Friday double-header was disappointing. New Mexico fell 3-2 to host TCU followed by a 5-0 sweep to No. 1 USC. The head coach said in the statement that his team couldn’t get anything together and just played flat on the road in Fort Worth, Texas.
Saturday didn’t get much better for the Lobos who fell 3-2 to University of Louisiana at Monroe in the team’s rough weekend. The three-game losing streak is the longest UNM has suffered all season.
Though the polls have yet to come out in DiG magazine, the official magazine of NCAA Beach Volleyball, the Lobos will likely be stripped of their unofficial No. 12 ranking heading into the final tournament of the year.
“ULM played a great match, we were just a little inconsistent which kept us under pressure,” UNM assistant coach Pauline Manser said in a UNM release following Saturday’s loss. “We were exposed to a higher level of play all weekend, so now we have to reset and work harder in practice to play at a high level more consistently.”
The Lobos will take its second week off in the 2016 year before traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the Battle of the Bayou tournament. The five-match tournament will be the most in a single tournament in the second year the program has been around.
