New Mexico finished up its two game stint on the road against Sacramento State, completing the early week sweep over the hornets in a 12-3 rout.
The Lobos (17-8, 7-2 MW) who have been on a tear as of late, have won 11 of their last 14 contests, dropping only a one-game series in the process.
Sophomore right hander James Harrington (4-1) picked up the win in Tuesday’s victory, and he did so behind the bats of a very potent UNM offense.
“James Harrington continues to improve,” head coach Ray Birmingham said in a release following the sweep. “We need him to. Jack Zoellner, Jared Holley and Chris DeVito were on fire.”
UNM’s starter went five innings, throwing 80 pitches and allowing three runs on seven hits during his day. He also walked a pair of Hornets while striking out two as well.
DeVito and Zoellner each went yard against the Hornets in the early stages of the contest, while Holley picked up three hits, plating one, and scoring twice.
The Lobos jumped on Sacramento State early with a 6-0 lead before the Hornets tried to answer with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Lobos continued to tack on extra cushion for their relief pitchers with a two run top of the sixth, followed by a four-run seventh inning.
According to the release, the Lobo leadoff hitters reached base seven of the nine innings, putting the pressure on Sacramento State early and often.
UNM was able to work through seven pitchers from Sacramento State in the 12 run showing.
The Lobos will return to Mountain West action this weekend in a three-game stand with UNLV (9-14, 3-6 MW). UNM sits at second in the league, just behind Air Force, who have a 4-1 MW record. Those two teams will face off in the final series of the regular season in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
