Senior Allan Hamilton jumped 24 feet, 9 ½ inches this past weekend at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. The leap was not only the best collegiate jump at the invite, but was enough to garner the MW Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
According to a UNM release, the jump ranks him 19th in the nation and is best in the Mountain West by over six inches.
Though the senior has taken two outdoor athlete of the week accolades a season ago, it is the first indoor honor the long jumps/sprints athletes will be able to place on his mantle.
Being the first meet UNM competed in this season, it is the first weekly honor to go to a Lobo. According to the release, it is the 10th time New Mexico has received an indoor accolade since the MW expanded the number of conference athletes to win the award last season.
Last year was the first time both track and field participants of both genders were recognized for the award. Before, track and field events were combined allowing for the expansion to move from two to four players awarded.
Hamilton was only beat out by Fabrice Lapierre, but remained at the top of all collegiate jumpers.
