New Mexico couldn’t move up in the standings in the second half of the Utah Invitational that concluded on Monday. The Lobos finished in fifth place, the same position they were in prior to the Nordic squad taking over for the alpine skiers.
Alpine
Junior Karoline Søvik Mykelbust, who missed most of last season with a broken bone at the RMISA qualifier last season, finished with two top 10 finishes early last week for the Lobos. Sydney Staples also joined Mykelbust with a top-ten finish in the women's slalom, finishing in seventh.
The men's alpine squad sent down a total of six skiers for the Utah invitational, and for five of them it was their first time competing at the collegiate level. Sadly, none of the Lobos made top 25, with the closest competitor for the Lobos being Rob Greig, who finished in 24th place.
But Youri Miguel and the men's slalom squad picked things up towards the closing of the alpine events, when he got nineteenth-place in his last run of the day.
Nordic
The men's Nordic squad had a solid finish from sophomore Kyle Beiling, who finished the invite in 14th. It was his best performance thus far in his collegiate career.
The women's Nordic squad had a solid couple of days for the Lobos. Three girls had top 10 finishes, with the likes of senior Emilie Cedervärn, junior Eva Sever Rus, and freshman Kati Roivas. The trio closed the gap for the women's Nordic squad, coming in second to Utah in the discipline.
For Cedervärn it was her 12th top 10 finish, but it ended a tenth consecutive podium finish. For Sever Rus, it was her 18th career top 10 finish.
The Lobos scored more point this year's meet (479) compared to last year's meet (465.5), but finished a spot lower than they did last year.
The Nordic squad will be traveling to Bozeman for the Montana state invitational that the Lobos' alpine stand participated in over the weekend. Through two days of events, UNM currently stands in seventh place among the eight schools participating.
Nordic events start on Jan. 17.
