After UNM’s loss last weekend to Wyoming at home, the swim and dive team looks to turn things around with a win against Northern Colorado.
UNM (2-1) lost in a dual meet against Wyoming at home last weekend, with a final score of 170-130. It wasn’t a tragic loss, though, with great performances from UNM’s freshmen. Adriana Palomino, a freshman from Tempe, Arizona, won three events, while another freshman, Mareike Foster, finished first in the 200-meter breast stroke.
Performances from across the board were good, but not enough to edge off the Cowgirls. Moving forward to this weekend, the Lobos take on Northern Colorado (2-2). Coaches and players on the Lobos said they expect a smooth sailing victory for their team.
Sophomore Morgan Ginnis, who’s swimming the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle, and 50 meter freestyle this upcoming weekend, said the upcoming dual meet is more practice than anything.
“This weekend is just for more training. We’re not going to any meets far away, like Missouri last year, so we’re just training throughout this year and going to dual meets until conference,” Ginnis said. “I expect this weekend ... for us to win by a lot. We’ve been training very hard this week, but I feel like our team is very strong this year and I think we’ll be very good this weekend.”
Head coach Kunio Kono said the event will be better than last week’s performance. According to Kono, he thought last week’s performance was an overall great performance by the team, despite the end score.
“Well this weekend we have [a meet] against Northern Colorado University, and well, last week we had a great meet; great, great meet and great performances from our girls, every single person,” Kono said. “They stepped up everything. I know they’ll be ready for this weekend and that Northern Colorado is a good team. They have some, you know, good talent, kids, and so on… but, on the paper we should be no problem. Our girls just need to do what they have to do in their jobs.”
UNM faces off in a dual meet against Northern Colorado this Saturday starting at 11a.m. The meet will take place in Seidler Natatorium, inside Johnson Center.
