Football: Wiggins secures first conference player of the week award

The Mountain West announced on Monday wide receiver Carlos Wiggins received MW Special Teams Player of the Week recognition.

Wiggins ran a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in UNM’s 28-27 comeback victory over Hawaii on Saturday. It's Wiggins' first such honor of his career.

“It was simple, but it wasn’t easy. I just have to hit it as hard as I can,” Wiggins said of his return after the game. " I want to thank my guys for blocking for me. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have been able to return that. So I want to thank them first of all, and my coach for calling that play. That return was lovely; it was the best feeling.”

The return extended Wiggins’ school and Mountain West record to five kickoff returns for scores. Wiggins is averaging 31.0 yards per return, which is fourth best in the nation.

Wyoming quarterback Cameron Coffman and Utah State linebacker Kyle Fackrell were named MW offensive and defensive players of the week.
